Not really a case of bonus for the range units, as distance is distance. More a case of how being fired upon in the rear (ouch) or flank will effect the morale.

I would thought that getting shot from the side or rear (where you can't use your shields) would cause more casualties.

Good point... guess it would depend on the armour or shield carried... but if they were aware of the archers would they not shield themselves?

I just happened to beat this scenario last night after 4(?) defeats. The key is backing up a couple of squares onto a little higher ground. Made a HUGE difference. A more important tactic for all battles I suppose as well.

Yes and yes. When one can defend uphill, behind ditches, or in good order at the edge of disordering terrain, one is well advised to do so.
