Played another game just now. Me against the "amateur" AI at ELO 1280. This showcases a totally different, more modern, setting. The AI still makes big blunders at this level, so I'm going to have to advance the difficulty a notch to "challenger" (1500+ ELO) for my future games.

I've managed two stalemates against the "Challenger" AI (around 1500 ELO). The difference between 1300 (amateur) and 1500 is significant.
Ok, any suggestions on how to get better? First of all, I think I need to learn some openings.......

@Nathangun I'll take a look. I'll go ahead and warn you that I'm not very good. After a couple dozen games, the computer puts me at about 1270 ELO, and regularly beats me when I set the AI to 1500 ELO.

No wargame is more elegant than chess, IMO. Everything else just adds randomness and obfuscation.
While I agree, you taught me yourself that warfare and Combat Mission play out much more like poker than like chess.
