CMFI: The Battle for Heraklion - vers. 2

@Rico... what are you using to make those maps they are awesome.. can you send me your files so I can have a play?

It's all photoshop with graphic elements imported/borrowed/hacked from other games' graphics folders (PanzerCorps, Commander Europe at War and Unity of Command and others stuff I find on the internet) and some material from HexDraw ... I can pop you over the master file for the Heraklion map if you want to have a look.

At first I thought this was a Crete mod and I was all excited but what is that map? The shape of Kos but with a Cretan name? And with "Leros" through all around? It's like the ultimate Greek island!

It's fictional island, based on Kos with all kind of names added in ... always liked the sound of Heraklion -- that's why I picked it. :D

Found this system for converting multi-hex attacks and combats into CM map set ups -- thinking of using something similar in this campaign.

Nice, Rico. I always loved that you named it Heraklion...I always liked the sound of it too. I really enjoyed that last version, but it was only two days long...too short! Would this be considered Part 2 of the original, or a completely new one?

As mentioned above, If there's room, I'd like to be in this and on the Axis side again.

The plan (on some as yet undetermined future date) for it to be a brand-new version of the campaign, but with basically the same premise - British paras land and get into trouble against strong, well improvised German defenses. :D

This time we have proper Mediterranean maps for the proper atmosphere...

British Parachute Brigade officers briefing their troops about Operation Hopscotch, the (fictitious) invasion and capture of Heraklion and its airfields, late Sept 1943.

The operation is expected to be a walk in the park with not much resistance expected from the German garrison troops...

Will post basic rules soon ... will be keeping them quit streamlined as I want to keep this as much of a narrative-driven campaign as possible with myself as GM adding in the flavour and curve balls to the company-sized infantry-intensive battles with limited heavy weapon support ... there will be full FOW with limited intel (often only what's gleaned from the CM battles) and full tracking (or as close as we can get) of unit casualties.
This is not guaranteed to be a balanced fight, but hopefully a fun and challenging one ... orders from up high may change mid-battle ... unit orders may get lost, units delayed etc.
To maintain pace and interest, battles will also be kept short... but will vary according to requirements... there may be some unconventional encounters which might differ from the usual set pieces players might be used to.

Hope to recruit soon - (holding thumbs work and RL remains on an even keel for next couple of months) ... will need a CO for each side and various battle commanders with good turn rates ... it will all be played in CMFI.

Ok, here are the updated rules for the new HERAKLION campaign.

I have kept them quite simple and compact (and most of the rules from Heraklion I still work pretty well) -- there is additional stuff that will be added in as the campaign develops and the OOB's are revealed to each side.
Also campaign objectives will be only known to each sides' CO ... and these may change as the battle develops.
As I said, I'd like to run this primarily as a "narrative campaign" -- and as GM reserve the right to throw in a few curve balls to make life "interesting" for everybody concerned. :)

I am limiting this to a TWO day battle, with an option to extend to days THREE (or even FOUR), depending how things develop -- but I want it to have a definite end point.

@Bootie -- this is basically ready to go whenever the FGM has a slot for it -- the size/hex numbers of the map and number of units have been reduced probably will involve about 4-5 players a side, incl. the CO's.

When/if I get go-ahead, we can start recruiting.

You know, Rico, there should be room in the Axis OOB for a Fallschirmjager unit. I know just who I'd like to command that unit....:2charge:

Help a Newbie who read the PDF.
  1. What's expected for someone who's never done this?
  2. What's the best way and role for a new fellow who might be interested?
Thank you.

Pick a side and sign up as a battle group commander, which will mean all you need to do is fight the CM battles.

The map and rules mostly concern the two Commanding Officers who will run operations for each side.
