Cross of Iron

Here's a sneak preview of the opening scenario.

Your are Major ________ (insert your name here) ... it is early July 1944, and you have just returned from leave in the Reich, and have just caught up with your unit, the 12th Panzer Division which has urgently deployed from a refitting area in the Baltic area to help stem the Soviet offensive that is threatening to envelop Minsk from the south.

Acting divisional commander, Oberst Mueller welcomes you back to the front and immediately assigns you command of one of the key Kampfgruppen, based on a halftrack-mounted panzergrenadier company and a weakened company of 11 Panzer IV's, replacing the original commander who was wounded in an air attack two days ago.

The main body of your command has crossed the small Bobr river past the village of Slovakja Duna towards the main blocking position near Marina Gorka, with the panzergrenadiers taking the lead.
Problems with fuel supply has stranded the Panzer IV group just the other side of Kholkoz 89.

Early morning and in pouring rain, your HQ group joins a platoon of panzergrenadiers with a fresh assignment of halftracks, 2 new Stummel halftracks, 2 heavy armoured cars and two scout halftracks - all intended as reinforcements for your Kampfgruppe, as well as a supply convoy carrying fuel and ammunition for the panzers.

As you get close to Slovakja Duna, you spot a column of smoke near the bridge and are flagged down a scout team in a kuebelwagen.

They breathlessly report that their vehicles got ambushed at the Seed Oil Mill just west of the bridge over Brobev river by Russian infantry, presumed to be infiltrating cavalry or recon units which have set up a blocking position around the mills.

Your immediate priority is to clear the Russian road-block and get the supply convoy through to the panzer company, otherwise your panzergrenadiers at Marina Gorka are sitting there exposed to any Russian tank spearheads that could be heading their way. You have no time to lose, and you should have the firepower at hand to blast your way through.

A radio message from the Panzer Company commander, Hauptmann Heidemann, informs you that by siphoning off spare fuel from all the panzers, one Pz IV is mobile enough to head back to the bridge to give fire support if necessary.

Good luck, commander.

Ok, here what I suggest we do -- I'll make note of the players indicating interest in participating so far and keep this open for new sign-ups until tomorrow.
Then I'll do a draw for the first set of active German commanders -- the rest will be in reserve.

Meanwhile I'll discuss feasibility with having a couple of players joining me in role-playing the Russians -- this will determine final numbers of campaigns.

I think I'll pass on this one to give newer members a spot. There will be enough coming in the future

Ok, here is the shortlist of players so far expressing interest to take command of a Kampfgruppe:

@Hedgehog
@Nort
@Odin
@Mehlsack
@Strachwitz
@Shorker
@Hang Fire
@mjkerner
@wildcard

I will leave it open for anyone else until about 8pm my time (GMT +2), then I will draw the first set of 4 players.

After discussion with potential Russian assistant players, I may expand by a further 2.
(Keeping an eye on 6 detailed Kampfgruppe OOB's is just about all I can comfortably manage at this point)

Each player's kampfgruppe will get their own dedicated thread in which to post screenshots, AAR's and ongoing reports about the progress of their campaign.

I'll be happy to help you with the Russians, mate - no problem (and you sent me the map already ;)). :D

It's a nice and interesting task - it will be fun to play in the "enemy" group.

By the way - will there be a ribbon? :cool:

Hi Rico,

Since I have a number of RL commitments for the rest of the summer, just put me on the German reserve/replacement commander list instead of in the initial selection pool.

Thanks.

Ok, here's the result of the Cross of Iron draw - done old school with names scribbled on pieces of paper picked from a cup :)

First set of Kampfgruppe commanders:

1. @Hedgehog
2. @Mehlsack
3. @Odin
4. @mTk
5. @Strachwitz
6. @General Specific

Reserves:

1. @Nort
2. @Hang Fire
3. @wildcard
4. @mjkerner
5. @nathangun

@Mad Mike @Shorker @PhilM are enlisted and are briefed as official Russian assistant players.

I will kick this off during the course of this coming week -- if @Bootie can set up a dedicated forum for this, I can start setting up each Kampfgruppe's HQ area for briefings and battle reports.
