Well, I just reinstalled CMBB and fell in love again with the eastern front.
Then an old strange idea slowly comes back... I always wanted to understand what the feelings of the german army fluctuated from the easy battles of Barbarossa in June 41 through to the winter in front of Moscow, the defeat of Stalingrad and 2nd Kharkov, Kursk and the battle for Berlin.
So I think : why not play 1 historical or semi historical scenario once a week at the same date, starting now with the January 40 battles in Finland ? I have all my scenarios classified per date, so that's no pb to pick up 4 representative ones every month.
Now I just realised it's very tempting, but it will keep me on for the next 5 years...LOL

May be I will give it a try till June and the opening of Barbarossa just to see what it's like?

Man I know guys who play Silent Hunter 3 patrols on real time with computer on 24 hrs a day... That's nowhere less crazy...
 
Then I'm sorry I wasn't there to take part... although the pb with campaigns is that playing PBEM a turn takes a month, when even if its far less challenging (though you can buff up the AI player) you bag a large scenario in one or two nights.
 
That was exactly my second thought...lol Not sure either if the evolution of computers in the meantime will still allow running CMBB...
 
Definitely an interesting idea. Perhaps you might give some thought to abreviating somehow while still getting a feel for the concept. As far as being crazy, I think all of us appear to be a little nuts in the eyes of others.
 
I thought about playing only one scenario of each month every week. This way I divide the overall time by 4, but on the other hand is one scenario per war month is enough to get the feeling ?

And I was joking about being nuts, in my long gaming years I have seen people (probably including me...) doing much "crazyer" things...
 
What I'm curious about: how will you relive the nice, cozy Russian winters ? Take your laptop up to one of the Pyrennee tops and play there out in the open without jacket etc ?
 
No, I will just open the window... it was all white this morning and around minus 5 C. lol
 
Not exacty the same as minus 20 and a strong cold wind, but more realistic then the winter scenario I play sitting close to the heater !
 
It's lucky we don't have to light a fire under the computer in the morning to get it started...
 
Ok finally after a good night's work and a good morning sleep, I have settled down as follows :

I want the closing moves to be on my 60th birthday, on Dec 31st of this year. That leaves me 10 months, minus 2 weeks off for holidays.
It will be 25 to 30 battles (some operations will include several battles).

I start looking into my scenarios and will pick up ones that are
1. historical or at least semi historical
2. specially designed for axis vs AI
3. at least big
Will skip the 1940 Finland episode and directly start end of June 1941...
Will start a thread later for reporting.
 
Very interesting idea. I think you could get the same feel by skipping ahead to significant changes in tactics/equipment. For instance, 10 battles in winter of '42 will all feel more or less the same, but one battle before the arrival of the T-34 and one battle after would feel completely different, even given the exact same map and force allocation. In this way you may be able to skip quite a lot of repetitive battles and get more of a feel for how the yo-yo of equipment superiority swung back and forth between sides. It seems that most people tend to play scenarios setup with a clear, cool day. You might consider only dealing with the extremes instead. The weather in large portions of Russia goes from freezing cold in the winter to roasting hot in the summer and not a whole lot of time in-between. You might consider playing most of your battles in either heavy snow or extreme heat. This will have the added benefit(?) of forcing you to be careful about marching your men around since they will tire quickly under such conditions.

No matter what you decide, I agree that you're definitely nuts! :)
 
Agree with you, no point in repetition. I'll dig out scenarios which I feel are representative of the moment and of the main battles. June 41 to April 45 makes roughly 4 years so around 6 to 7 battles a year should do it.
 
Opening move will be a 3 battles Operation "Death on the Northwest Front" June 23 1941
Specially designed for play Axis vs AI.

" By the start of the 2nd day of Barbarossa the Red Army was falling back as quick as possible. SW of Vilno, Pz Grp 3 had ripped through the hasty defenses of the Soviet 11th Army and secured the vital crossings on the Niemen. On the 23rd, Kutznetsov committed his troops and went on the attack with the 3rd and 12th Mechanised Corps counting over 250 tanks. By June 26, the 3rd MC was blown to pieces and the 12th was crawling out of the battle with the few units left. The Red Army's tanks were outgunned, underarmored, outmaneuvered, poorly led and out of fuel..."
 
@ Cue Ball : Thks for confirming me I'm nuts, I was affraid of becoming "normal" as I am getting older...
