I've just received "The Hurt Locker" through my DVD club. The Mrs is going out on Friday night with her mates. So I've got some quality time with my surround sound system to look forward to.

I've heard good things about this film, any of you guys seen it?

I too have it in my netflix queue. I've heard only good things.

Seen it and must say it's a pretty good film. Not that I knew too much of the real situation (although I have spkken with a umber of Afghanistan veterans), but I think the problems and hardships those soldiers face over there each day are portrayed accurately - likely the reality is even worse.
The thing is: you can identify with the soldiers, understand what they're doing and why they're doing things... understand that even soldiers are just ordinary human beings thrust into a very extreme situations they're not meant to be in and have never learend to deal with. I recommend it.

Never heard of the film, what war is it set in ? and what's the storyline ?

Quick synopsis

"Iraq. Forced to play a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse in the chaos of war, an elite Army bomb squad unit must come together in a city where everyone is a potential enemy and every object could be a deadly bomb."

My verdict: Excellent

Edge of the seat stuff right through the film. The film has an authentic feel about it. Thinking back I'm not sure there was any background music in the film. Which I think help give it a documentary feel. The actors were also solid as they didn't over-act.
There was only one scene I didn't like but I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it.

Great film, well worth a watch...

I've never seen it but I heard it was directed by a woman and that put me off.
But I think she won an academy award for it so I might wait for it to come around on TV and watch it then.

Seen it and it was good entertainment better then a kick in the pants;) I give it a 8 out of 10 on the Great White North Scale

Every moviemaker/director takes more or less of this so-called "artistic license" to make for better storytelling. Sometimes it does work out, sometimes it doesn't. And how realistic a film wants to be or is supposed to depends entirely on the message it wants to convey.

The thing to remember is this (and we should remind us more often): movies are movies because - be honest - no one actually WANTS to have reality in a movie. Reality is what you have the whole day long and what you see when you turn on the news. Movies are there for relaxing, to make us feel better, to tell us that not everything is as bad as it seems and that we still can dream, that we can believe we do live in a better world than we actually do. SO I don't care for realism in this instance as long as the underlying message hits the point - which I think it does very well.

ok, but having the general public think that you just pull out 9x 155mm arty shells by their fuzing wire goes to far for me...

You could just as well explain how to defuse a bomb in every detail and still 99% of the viewers wouldn't be able to do it - so what's the point? If it helps storytelling and makes things more dramatic or make the hero seem more tough or cool, then so be it. It's a movie and no documentation. What would the movie gain by depicting everything in a 100% realistic manner?
