Funny names for unfunny weapons

Hi guys! Found this article a few months ago, but was too lazy to translate it. Done it now :) Source is there.

10th place:
Underbarrel 40mm grenade launcher GP-30 named "Shoes"

9th place:
220mm (256kg) rocket for soft targets named "Quarantine" :)

8th place:
A-bombs, as a tradition, named by female names. First one (1951) there was "Maria", then (1953) "Tatyana" and now the tactical "Natasha"

Container system of missile control named "Phantasmagoria",

Cellphone station based on airplane - "Grumbler"

Handcuffs "Tenderness", truncheon "Argument" :) Telescopic foldable truncheon "Surprise" :))

30mm aviation automatic gun "Little ballerina" (for MiG-29 and Su-27)

Intercontinental ballistic missile "Good guy" (in western classification: SS-24 «Sсаlреl» Моd 2 (РL-4)).

1st place:
Modified version of T-72 - the T-72M1, that can be compared with next generation tank T-90S. T-72M1 equipped with the device for protect crewmen from nuclear blast's shockwave, radioactive and poisonous hazards. It can pass the river with up to 5 meters depth... This tank name is "Banana" :))

A little more:
Seems like Russian weapon developers are just kidding a little on their foreign colleagues. See, Germany has "Leopard" tank. Israel has "Merkava" (battle chariot). Sounds dangerous. USA has "Abrams" and France has "Leklerk", both named for famous generals. Russia has T-72B "Slingshot"... named for a slingshot :biggrin1:

Makes you wonder how some of the nicknames came to be. Very interesting.
 
Interesting that none of this names was given by soldiers or someone like that. These all are official names, given by developers :)
 
Are those the NATO desigantions or the Rusisian names for those systems?
 
Those are all Russian names. Of course, every weapon or system has also a model number, like T90, or 2S7 for Pion.
 
My favorite is "Pinocchio" flamethrower. I just close my eyes and clearly see, as 30 flamed wooden logs one by one, in Katyusha style, flying to the enemy positions. :biggrin:
