Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45

I don't like the game for the scale chosen 10km/weekly (and of course it's me), but even if the price is not cheap I think is fair (only 5$ more then WitE).
The download version is 80$.

Yeah, the game is massive and if you can get into it, you should get your moneys worth a couple of times over.
Anyway, so far I've only played the invasion of Sicily once in Easy Mode .. came out as a major victory for me, unsurprisingly. ;)

Yes, I have access to the beta forum, currently they are working on the new 1.01.10 patch (smaller fixes).
Husky it's a good starting point, I'll wait for your setup.
If you haven't played WITE before, I suggest you to take care of the new air directive system. It is more effective than it was on the previous game, but don't let the AI to do all the work for you.

Great, I've created a private challenge (my username on Slitherine PBEM++ is "MikeMUC").
I will create a conversation here on FGM to tell you the password.

Looking forward to seeing you in Sicily. ;)

I broke down and ordered it (as if I don't have enough to do). I played many many hours of the old DOS based versions years ago. WitE was fun, but WitW I REALLY enjoyed. Now the new version promises to be even better. There is less opportunity for that eye watering defensive front from the picture. Much lower unit density. I like the new air "module" a lot. I'm looking forward to spending a lot of hours with it.

Scale chosen doesn't matter as much to me. i tend to like games of many different types. Back in college we had the old SPI monster game of War in the East (or War in Russia - can't remember what they called it - 4 maps, plus a map sized production track, thousands of units). Played it for a whole semester. We started on War in Europe but never finished.

I've just come across War in the East and War in West, and I am interested to know what FGMers think of WitW now it's been out for a while? From what I've read and seen on You Tube there seems to a lot of game so to speak, but then it has got quite a hefty price tag. Do you guys think it is worth it?

Definitely worth it. I've played through Operation Husky a number of times to get the hang of all the mechanics. Now I'm doing a PBEM of the whole 43-45 campaign. I really like the game. I think it's well worth the money. The level of detail that you can access just amazes me. But once you get into it, the mechanics of playing are pretty reasonable. And the air module is very well done. You can micro-manage as much as you want or let the AI handle a lot of it if that's not your interest. However, doing your own work on the air campaign seems to provide better results - at least once you know what you are doing. I fall somewhere in between. I have the AI set air directives based on priorities and then tweak them some or a lot, depending on what's happening at the moment. If you follow the Matrix forum section for a while, it will give you a good feel for the game. There are quite a few AAR's too that people are good about posting screen shots, sometimes annotated.

Thanks @ultradave, it sounds like WitW is worth the money. Just out of interest, how long does it take you to play out a single turn in the 1943-45 campaign? What would be regarded as an Axis victory?

Probably about 30 minutes. some of that is waiting for the AI to finish doing some things and for me to scratch my head wondering what the hell happened :) . And that's if I have a lot of editing to do on air missions. If I'm continuing as before or only changing one or two, then 15-20.
