That's what I was looking at. I do see your point though. Yeah.
However, I still suspect the shell came in from a slightly higher elevation to do that.
FGM, how did they fix that?

One attempted solution was to fabricate a raised ridge along the top of the chassis to block shots that might otherwise be deflected down into the turret ring.

I was looking at the pic again and just saw where the shell hit the gun mantlet first.
Well, I was sorta right. It did hit higher first.

I'm running some gunnery tests to kill time during the coronavirus lockdown. Using a Panther A as the shooter and a Sherman with the 75mm gun as the target. In a small number of tests the buttoned Sherman has spotted the open-hatch Panther first and even got off one or two shots before the Panther spots him. This last one amazingly demonstrated the ricochet problem with the gun mantle, including two separate penetration decals on the Panther.

A thoroughly destroyed Tiger. It took me a few minutes looking at it before I could decide that this is looking at the front end of the tank . You can see what appears to be the transmission and final drive shaft laying off to the left side.
