Graviteam Tactics: Mius-Front is out

I actually got back to Mius Front yesterday after a long break. Forgot half of how it works. But I did manage to play one battle.

Maybe some of you can help with some advice?

I find it really difficult to set up infantry on the defence. I know the LOS tool, but it's extremely tedious to click each unit and move it about until finally it has LOS. The gently sloping hills make it difficult to really find many long sight lines.
There's also a button to make the squads of a platoon automatically set up with max LOS to the front and minimal to the sides. I just find it doesn't really work....

Any tips or tricks?
I find this to be the most time consuming and tedious part of the game. I dread the set up because of this and it is such a relief when it is over. I also have never found the automatic set up feature to be of much use. A better way to visualize terrain and LOS would be helpful.

Ok, so it's not just me being daft at least.

The 1/14/2021 contains a new campaign and new maps. So Graviteam has added new content in this update.

Impressive... they patch and update the game more in a week than Battlefront patches Combat Mission in a year.

Just looking at the patch notes for this update now.. Seems it's only new content for the DLC called Strong Point?

Yeah, I saw that as well last night. The initial abbreviated update notice on Steam did not mention that it was for Strongpoint only. Sorry for the confusion.

No problem. Thought it was a bit too good to be true. "The trees do not grow into heaven" as we say here.

I fired this up and played a little. I'm in the Borki scenario. 2 KV-1s tormented my dug in infantry who had nothing to counter the monsters. The PAK50s may have well been shooting spit wads. They were able to cut down the supporting infantry and a truce was accepted. I find this part of the war in the East one of the most interesting. I wish Battlefront would add on the 41-43 time period to Combat Mission Red Thunder.

That's why I like Panzer Command Ostfront so much, you got battles from '41 through '45 in one title. I still play it occasionally, but it gets wonky in Win 10. I still play it on a WIN 7 laptop.

I forgot about Ostfront. I had the physical copy and looked into saved emails and still have SN.

I’m running Windows 10 though. I’ll have to see if updates fix it or work around will fix Win 10 issues.

Graphics were a bit dated when I played years ago. Game had interesting concepts.

I also still have West/East Front and Rising Sun.

Never heard of this game before. Just looked it up, and at first glance it looks a LOT like Combat Mission.

It came out about the same time as the CMBN release. It was roundly panned as being Combat Mission 1-1/2, that sentiment was evoked here as I recall. I bought into it because I liked the subject matter. It differs from the Combat Mission games, the graphics aren't even as good as CMBN, which says a lot, but they are serviceable and I do not find that it detracts from the game. But the game engine is solid and the choice of battles is vast. I haven't played in a year and a half, but I have the manual around somewhere and I'll describe the turn sequence. But I do know that the order system was different. For example, you could set a movement objective for a unit, then you would have multiple options on how to get there, like "fastest route", "undercover route", etc. To some extent, you can do the same thing in Graviteam games. Like Graviteam, it was very much more a commander's game (issue orders) than a micromanage every unit game.

@Zeke_21 There are a couple of guys still squashing bugs over at matrix Slitherine. I know one of the reasons this game has not progressed is there were some issues with some java components that had become obsolete with updated versions of Java. I know at one point my non-programmer ass tried to help find some answers and offered up some suggestions to the guys working on it. With that said, I have played the tutorial battle on my Win 10 machine with no issues, but I guess there are some battles and campaigns where there are some issues and you can maybe see what the issues are over at the matrix forums. If you get it working perhaps we could slog through a PBEM game?

Sure I’ll try a PBEM game once I get fimilar with the system again. I didn’t play it a whole lot when I had it-I was probably really into Total War at the time...

I do vaguely remember it having a command and control system you had to keep in mind when using your forces.

My old email with the SN is from way back and download link is to Blue Snap which probably isn’t valid. I don’t see it listed in the new section on Matrix’s site where they list all the games you have and can download.

I don’t think I still have boxed copy which will suck as it had the nice printed manual.

I definitely want to try it out again. I’ve gotten into the East Front lately. Reading Tank Warfare on the Eastern Front and Cataclysm at the moment and have some other books on the way from Amazon and EBay.

I'm up and running and installed the update. Looking for an .ini file so I can see if I can boost the resolution up to 2560x1080. I also looked on the Matrix website to see if they still had mods for Ostfront. IIRC someone made a pretty big and comprehensive graphic mod for this. I didn't see it on the site.

Maybe I have an old CDrom with it somewhere.

Now its onto the tutorial and watching youtube videos on how to play

Try reading the tutorial guide first, it is more like a "quick start" guide and does a good job of explaining most of what you need to know. I better read through it if PBEM is in our future.

Played the tutorial. There is a lot to like about how things are done. I like the fact you give orders to a command unit and the rest follow. The bound command is very nice. In games like Combat Mission you have too much command and control over individual units. You can have a platoon of 5 tanks, but those 5 tanks can be given individual commands and they can act like 5 independent units. Gravteam doesn't quite allow as precise control as Combat Mission due to the way it handles unit, and no group commands like bound.

Have to play more to get a better idea of how things are done.

Graphics are workman like, just don't zoom in and expect 2021 level of fidelity. This was made over 10 years ago if not longer.

I really think Matrix should remaster this. It would fill a niche. Now that Battlefront is bound to Slitherine and Matrix may be doubtful they would put effort into a newer version of this. At the very least they should incorporate some of the features into Combat Mission as Ostfront handles some things better if you ask me.

I bought this when it came out played it very little then moved onto other things. I remember those who played it a lot really liked it and it had a following. I pretty much overlooked it. I can't say if the update you now install incorporates better graphics than original.
