I've found MGs to be pretty underwhelming myself, too. I've noticed quite frequently that if a unit is marching directly toward a MG position that they can be lethal, but if the unit is going at an angle or perpendicular to the MG they are in very little danger. It's like the gunners have no clue how to lead a target. Unless the target is approaching directly or sitting still, they are almost completely ineffective.
