I had a very small model railway as a kid but i never thought of expanding it because I couldn't see the point.
I mean, model railways can't be played like games can, all you do is watch the trains go round and i'd have been bored.
But later I was a big fan of the Railroad Tycoon PC game series because that WAS a game and I had great fun making money by shipping different cargos around..:)
 
I understand that the "ferro-Model", as we know it here, apart from being an expensive hobby, is that as you say, just look at the thumbnail .-

I do believe the real enjoyment of the hobby is in the creation of the layout. It is a lot like modelling in that respect. You do have the bonus of a moving train, but a layout like the ones pictured in this thread is very difficult to make "portable". With models and dioramas it is much easier to move them from place to place in order to display them.
