Holmes was a brilliant historian, and had the knack of engaging the audience in the matter being discussed, bringing the personal touch and oft sympathising with the soldier over his commander.

That rings so true, and always reminds me of the line from the Pink Floyd song Us and Them from Dark Side of the Moon....

His erudite interpretation of military history is superb.
There's a man I would love to have met.
