Currently enjoying part one of this 4 part BBC series again on You Tube, narrated by the brilliant Professor Richard Holmes.
Well worth watching.

This is great, thanks for bringing this series to my attention.

Holmes was a brilliant historian, and had the knack of engaging the audience in the matter being discussed, bringing the personal touch and oft sympathising with the soldier over his commander.

From War Walks - Western Front episode 4.....

"One impression of the First World War haunts us perhaps more than any other.
That of thousands of brave young men condemned to a futile death by the incompetence of the generals that led them."
That rings so true, and always reminds me of the line from the Pink Floyd song Us and Them from Dark Side of the Moon....
"The Generals sat, and the lines on the map moved from side to side."

His erudite interpretation of military history is superb.

There's a man I would love to have met.
