The Soviet tank had been retreating until it got blocked and bogged close to a lake or river.
A few days later German soldiers while bathing in this lake/river discovered that there is a soviet tank.
One soldier has photo camera and thinks this will be a funny picture and people will even wonder 78 years later... ;)

The T-34 tank driver Mikhail Smirnov after a victorious battle with german forces near the village of Lomonosov Gostilitsy, Jan. 17 1944. Smirnov was killed in action six months later in the battle for the city of Dvinsk, today known as Daugavspils, Latvia.

3 things pop at me in this picture:
1. The look on Stalin's face like "glad I'm not the one having to go into this metal coffin"
2. the crude-looking, gigantic welding seams between the armor plates
3. the comparison between the new 152mm beast-cannon and the old-fashioned napoleon-era cannons on the building behind.

Someone, hint, hint, made a mighty fine menu screen mod for RT using a colorized version of this photo. For some reason it's not in the mod warehouse so if you want it you can grab it here:

A T-34-85M2 tank at the "Rubin-87" exercises held near Warsaw. The T-34-85M2 used T-54/55 style road wheels, improved transmission, new radio and intercom, a snorkel and deep wading gear, and a remotely aimed and fired hull machine gun operated by the commander. Posted by Tank Archives on FB, I highly recommend his Twitter feed.
