Squad

Have you bought SQUAD yet or what!? :)

No, I don't think I am in the best time zone to play the game with such few players in beta. I'm in no hurry.

Too bad. That feature alone is a show stopper for me. Perhaps one day they will improve the game and have an option to toggle the tags on or off.

I find it curious when players take the term "realistic" too literally when it comes to gaming, especially in sims. I too wouldn't hope to play Squad with player tags hovering over players regardless of where they are relative to the player. That does not mean I would think eliminating player tags all together is good either. Just like some ArmA mods out there, I would hope for a system where perhaps player tags appeared over players in certain circumstances, typically close range in LOS. If the game does not model unique faces/uniform outfits, how else are you meant to "realistically" identify who you are looking at? "Realistically" you would ID a squad mate very quickly but in a computer sim such simple tasks are "unrealistically" much more difficult to do. This also goes for flight sim game like IL2 etc. Relying on your vision to interpret a monitor that pixelates a 3D world is not in itself realistic. How a monitor displays an object x metres away from a player does not really have any correlation with how you would actually interpret that object if it was actually x metres from you. If you could identify someone by their face alone when they are standing say 30m from you doesn't mean that when you play a game where that person is represented as a 3D model 30m from you, you would also be able to identify the 3D representation of that player by their face alone.

I've had a few good sessions in the past 3x days, the Unreal engine is really nice.

Right now my biggest complaints would be:
No freelook
No key mapping
No insurgency mode
Name tags are annoying, but I'm patient.

Bottom line is the devs are 100% behind mods, and the game will be 100% mod-able.
I have faith.

I went on a tear with the SAW last night that has me grinning ear to ear!

Lastly the name tags can be bound to a key binding. And with a quick key press I can get a popular name in text magically floating above a teammate's head. But only if they are close enough to me. And closer if the visibility is not good (not at night) or they are prone, or in tall grass/bushes.

This would be perfect.

I agree with you Bullman. I've noticed in real life I can recognize people from the way that they move. I have never been able to articulate exactly why. This would be impossible to duplicate in game ( at least it is beyond comprehension how we could program or model it when it is so difficult to even pick out what the differences are).

So I am content to have some other ways to recognize players in game. Such as the use of unique faces. As I start a mission I pay attention to my squad ( and particularly my fireteam) and make a note of what each member looks like. His particular face (age, moustache, beard, glasses etc). The type of weapon and equipment is a big help as well as their position in our fireteam/squad. (Ie if "Davis" is on the far right flank I can assume the rifleman next to the grenadier in the far right is "Davis ").

Anyhow those are the options that are currently available in game. Although they do not provide the same awareness of real life.

I would not want to watch a movie with little name tags above everyone's head that was close to the camera. And I prefer to play FPSs with a key binding to toggle the name tags.

Well it is less than perfect. But it is currently available. It would be even better if we could customize our own body type and with varied bulk or limb length our movement was more unique and our shapes were more readily recognizable. But then I'm not expecting perfection. Just something a little bit better than the constant text reminding me I'm in a game.

Examples of some avatars in game that I would note if they were in my team.

I always went with the grey bearded old man in ARMA. I figure I am about 15-20 years older than most players, so why not look the part. :)

I think the idea of being able to press a key to temporarily show the name tags of players within range/LOS that you would have realistically identified is probably the best compromise. Would be happy with that.

Keep in mind that digital battlefield technology that will allow soldiers to have a HUD overlay on what they see might would probably include some kind of ID/tag system. I thought I may have seen a story a few weeks ago about this.

Alpha v 2.0 update this Friday, surprisingly it will include my all time favorite game mode - Insurgency.
Some big changes in here, they are making some real progress.

I mean squad looks good I just dont see why people might want to use it instead of modded arma , Plus I dont really see it making a huge impact on the more causal crowd

The good news is, you can own and play both for the cost of a nice dinner out, so no choice is really required.

I still keep meaning to get ARMA 3 modded up and running, I just need to set aside the time and do it!

I've purchased Squad and so far I am falling in love with the game. Controls are good and gameplay is smooth. Being an ARMA player, I do miss the free-look option but its not the end of the world once you get used to the handicap. The firefights are just amazing! The chatter and pops of small arms mixed with the thump and booms of GLs and the whoosh of RPGs is intoxicating. Teamwork is a must and when you get a team working in sync the game hits new levels of intense.

To borrow a random review from Steam: "ARMA and Insurgency bumped uglies and had a baby, that baby's name is Squad"

Wow Septic...rather compelling review...have yet to commit...not doubting the review(s)
