Tactics Academy DAR#2 AC Spectre Vs 2054172

Turn 25 from AC.

Not too much more to report, except that he moved his Sherman and M10 on fast, bad idea IMO they should have been on hunt.

I have decided not to bleed my forces any longer as the odds are now stacked severely against me. I have requested a ceasefire from my opponent. I shall offer a critique of my own performance once the all too familiar sting of defeat has sudsided a bit.

The Tiger swings its turret almost 180 degrees and gets off a killing shot before my Achilles can fire a single round??!! I can't buy a flippin' break. Should have put a pause order on the Achilles and let the Sherman go in head on. I would have lost he Sherman but I would have got a clear flank shot on the Tiger. The Sherman got a shot off at the Tiger that just bounced off, only a matter of time before he swings the turret and takes the Sherman out too. I should have just let the damn Tiger sit there and rot while I maneuvered around him.

Turn 26 from AC, not a lot to report except that numberz brewed up that sherman.

Both sides have agreed to a ceasefire.

The result:

And here is the final shot with the end front lines marked on.

Here's my summary:

AC had a massive numerical superiority in armor that he failed to utilise. He moved his armor in groups of around 4 vehicles, which is good, but when the time came to take on the tiger he let them get spread up allowing the tiger to pick them off 1 by 1, which is exactly what a tiger wants.

AC tried to flank down Numberz left hand flank, it was a good idea but i think he was a little unambitious with this maneuver. I think he should have moved his infantry platoon he had there across the road and pushed deep into numberz rear area.

AC used his artillery well, getting an immobilization on Numberz Tiger, unfortunately he could not exploit this and seemed to choose to take the tiger head on.

As for Numberz he seemed to pick a strategy of intimidation, buy the heaviest tanks you can and hope this intimidates your opponent, which it definatley seemed to do. AC had a good few opportunities to get side/rear shots on the Brummbar but he missed these.

Of course it is easy to criticise when you can see both sides, and there is every chance that in AC's shoes i could have lost this one easily, although i must say taking out big cats is a speciality of mine as numberz will testify.

Key lessons learned:

  • Buy tanks by the platoon and not individually, you can get them a lot cheeper.
  • If you buy HTs for transport make sure you check the transport class number to make sure they can actually transport what you need
  • Artillery can be very effective against armor
  • the allied 76.2mm gun (both the british and american version, the british version is much better) can penetrate a tiger frontally, so there is no need to send them on risky flanking maneuvers, leave this to your shermans and use them as bait, this is how tigers were historically took out
  • Close Air Support is a big gamble
  • You don't need AA guns to shoot down planes, any unbuttoned vehicle with an MG will shoot at planes

Ok i think that covers most things, let me know if ive missed anything guys!

Some of the big things I took from this game:

Buy Armor by the platoon
Try to avoid tunnel vision, I got obsessed with taking out the Tiger when I should have just left it there and concentrated my armor on attacking the other flank.
Remeber to use a combined arms approach, I basically left my infantry stationery after the first several turns. Makes them easy targets and don't do anything to help my cause.

I'd love to hear any input any one else may have.

That was an enjoyable DAR Jonny, and a thank you to the two gladiators for the entertainment :)
