Talk of CM : Afghanistan

There you again...the game designer throws good money after bad, instead of giving a great core of gamers CMx1 something to expand a sucessful system already.

Well, unfortunately I know as muchas you do at the moment. It is developed by a Russian company with the CMx2 engine and focusses on the Soviet war in Afghanistan from 1979-1989.

This has nothing to do with BFC whatsoever (safe it's their CMx2 engine), they're just publishing it for those of us who might like to pit Soviet troops against Mujahideen. After all, it is a successful engine, so why not make the most of it? We'll get our new WW2 CM soon enough - although I believe that esepcially those who just want an improved CMBO will be quite disappointed. You should read all the information before you form an opinion.

How soon is now?

If you're referring to CMN: I'm not privy to that kind of information - we only get a 'soon' from the higher echelons as well. Regarding CM:Afghanistan I sadly have the same answer. Remember, people - I'm just a simply guy doing some textures and betatesting, nothing more.

There seems to be a holdup regarding the campaign of CM: Afghanistan, but it should be around the corner. Everything else I'm not allowed to talk about even if I knew.

There are some interesting posts about CM Afghanistan in our "CM Shock Force and Addons" section, dunno what they're doing in there..?

And I just noticed someone has been faster than me. Sorry for the unnecessary post, then...

essentially it is a mod of Shock Force.

It's a separate stand alone game according to their blurb, look-

"Combat Mission Afghanistan is the first collaboration between Battlefront and a third party studio to create a completely new game in the Combat Mission series.
CM Afghanistan is a standalone game and not an expansion, and does not require any of the other games to play!"

Oh okay, in that case there's no need for me to waste my time with a review copy if it's just a Shock Force clone..;)

Fair enough. :)

IMO it has more in common with Shock Force than with the games in Other Games.

It will appeal to players who like Shock Force so pointless to tuck it into Other Games when the ones playing it will be the same players who play Shock Force.

Well... it has water which Shock Force didn't. No idea how they're gonna handle it, but it'll make for a different tactical experience. And AA guns are also a feature Shock Force had not. I expect those to be able to shoot down enemy planes and helicopters, too (if around - or at least serve as a nice fire support asset. Besides that... good question if it will be much different. Not too much, probabaly.

Battlefront told me they'll send me a review copy when its released, so if they send it I might as well review it anyway..:)
As i've already said, a better title would be 'The Soviet-Afghan War 1979-89', as that would distance it from Shock Force and it'd appeal to gamers who want to take on the Mujahideen, as well as being an interesting study tool for that period.

Excerpt from a historical article on the net-

The War in Afghanistan (1979-1989) has been called "the Soviet Union's Vietnam War," a conflict that pitted Soviet regulars against a relentless, elusive, and ultimately unbeatable Afghan guerrilla force (the mujahideen). The hit-and-run bloodletting across the war's decade tallied more than 25,000 dead Soviet soldiers plus a great many more casualties and further demoralized a USSR on the verge of disintegration.
