The FGM Joins the XCOM Project

Sorry I don't have time to make a review, I'm having too much good time playing it ! o_O

You have hours of "let's play" on You Tube and many live broadcasts on Twitch, then you can judge by yourself ( which is what I did before release )

I enjoyed a lot before playing XCom EW with the Long War mod, but I find Xcom 2 different, forcing you to be more "on the move" rather than digging in. The fact you're playing the resistance gives you a general feeling of being the underdog.

In fact it's plenty of little things and details which make it better than the 2013 version, like for instance knowing in advance if you will have LOS in the square where you plan to move. But any mistakes you make are still mercilessly used by the opposition !

Mmm, after being totally hooked on XCOM and EW, and playing both multiple times, and also being a very time-poor creature, I think I'll bide my time by:

1/. First finishing all the CM: BS campaigns (since I'm still only half way through the US one)
2/. Get CM: FB
3/. Replay XCOM EW, with hopefully a 'shorter' Long War mod.

By then, XCOM2 will have come down in price, the bugfest it sounds to be currently resolved, its graphics requirements optimized/improved, and I'll be a happy camper!

I can understand the idea, that's what I usually do, but couldn't resist this time to get the discount and bonus on pre-order.

So far from the hours I've played myself and the hours of gameplay I watched on You Tube, I didn't see any major bugs, apart from the usual graphic glitches here and there that were already in EW and will also probably never be corrected. There have been a few reports of game crash, this is why I'm making a first discovery run with saves before going for an ironman campaign later once the patches are done.

It also works fine on my 2 year old system with i5 - 4670 CPU and a HD 7850 2 Go GPU. Just got rid of the usual unnecessary graphic stuff like high shadows everywhere, bloom, depth of field, etc...

For those looking at a brief video overview of the improvements of XCOM2 over XCOM, this may work for you:

They all carry really big guns. Do they have to compensate for something?

Just asking.

You already have mods on Steam Workshop to extend the number of turns or completely remove the timers. But of course it makes the timed missions a lot easier...
I find it forces you to think differently than "dig in and wait for opposition to come in your LOS" and take some risks. It also puts some stress on the player for each decision.

The whole game ( like Xcom EU ) is under time pressure anyway as the goal is to destroy the alien base before the Avatar project is completed. I find this feeling of urgency is one of the strong points of these games. ( there are anyway also mods to extend that Avatar completion time if you don't want to have this pressure )

Many scenarios in CM also have short time limits forcing you to be on the move.

@Corsaire31 I relayed your response to my nephew, who loves X-Com (but doesn't play Combat Misstion). Here is his reply:

"I don’t mind the timed missions but every other mission (seemingly) being a timed mission gets old to me. I don’t turtle up and wait for mobs to come to me. I am aggressive just not recklessly so. Some of those timers force you into reckless play. Now obviously that is their intention and doesn’t deviate from the enjoyment I just wish there were fewer of them. The game being under time pressure is a useless statement as the only way that timer affects you is if you fail too many missions. The game is plenty fun and wouldn’t mod it just to make it easier for me to play (I mean I play FROM software games for enjoyment for crying out loud) I just dislike how most games I seem to play lately seem to want to up the difficulty by hurrying you instead of more challenging game play. I am sure it is easier for them to just put a timer on it than plan more game mechanics though."

So, there you go. I tend to agree with him.

The developers make the games the way they want them, you don't have to play them if you don't like how it's done !

Mods are there to make it more suitable to everyone's taste (it was the same with Xcom EW "Second Wave" which offered plenty of different options), he can for instance put on longer timers to feel less time pressure and play at the superior difficulty level ?

Say hi to your nephew and tell him he should play Combat Mission ! ;)
