Researchers from Binghamton University, New York headed by Dr. Justin Garcia conducted a study, which found that human tendency to infidelity and promiscuity is directly linked to a gene DRD4.

The study, published in the journal PLoS ONE, says that DRD4 – Dopamine receptor D4 – may play a role in certain types of sexual behaviors. Previously, it had been established that it is associated with human tendencies such as alcoholism and gambling.

The experiment involved 181 young university students. Scientists questioned the subjects about their sexual behavior, and took their DNA samples. It was found that the people with a certain variant of DRD4 called variable number tandem repeats (VNTR) were much more involved in sexual activities without commitment.

Scientists stressed that not all people with this variable of the DRD4 were prone to infidelity. In addition, there were also many people who did not have this genotype were habitual of promiscuity. It all depends on the proportions: the percentage of people, who changed and had sex without commitment, was much higher if they had this variant of gene.
