Waterloo...

Ive bought the game and I'm part of the new forum which is a mix of players from NTW3 mod and other games, heres some of my thoughts that I wrote there.

"Yeah it was quite an informative battle and i learned quite a bit in regards to couriers and what the buttons actually do on the toolbar lol. As Miko said no fast forward button is a bit of problem but not a massive one. On the downside i must admit i was a little surprised on the lack of tactical depth and how un-rigid it all feels, ie units seem to wander willy nilly about the place, especially if under control of the AI. I mean i was telling one of my brigades to advance and they kind of did but they started changing their facings and crossing each others paths and such like, I had to take direct control to sort it all out which is not a good sign. Going back to lack of tactical depth, well, for a game that is concentrating on one single battle I thought they would have put more thought into it instead of just column of march, column by division and line. I mean come on thats not even scraping the surface of formations of the day, I truly hope this is something that can be modded. However i do still see vast potential for the game and it is fun to play and i can imagine a big battle with a loads of players on each side being a lot of fun."

For me I still think the devs are in civil war mode and haven't truly grasped the massive differences between the tactics of the time periods, but it's still early and much can change with patches and stuff.

Here's the link to the forum if anyone wants to have a bit more of a read.

I've found this game to be quite fun and very in-depth in terms of tactics and particularly the "command and control" aspect. Could it be improved? Of course, what game doesn't but there is indeed a lot going on under the hood, you just got to experiment with the UI in order to understand how to use those tools.

Here is a video of one battle in the "sandbox" I fought recently.

The vanilla game is not that great: as stated it is more like civil war Napoleonics. However, and luckily, the game has been extensively modded and is basically the best representation of Napoleonic warfare found currently.

I would recommend http://kriegsspiel.forumotion.net/t1603-28-battle-of-reynosa-18th-march-1809#17367 for anyone who is interested in the Napoleonic wars.

Be advised, this is the entire peninsula campaign and it is being refought. The battle's feature scourge of war BUT it is at the courier level!!!! You are essentially commanding via first person. It is tricky! It will take awhile to get used to. But there is nothing better! You can basically do whatever you imagine.

I love hiding my troops behind the reverse slopes and watching the opposition commander in chief go for the bait when I probe his line!

Each army commander, corps commander, divisional commander, and some brigade commanders are human!

It is quite the challenge. You really have to know your people. Assigning a timid, defensive oriented divisional commander to attack a crucial objective is going to end very badly. While assigning a impetuous brigadier a reserve role may not be the best decisions.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I'd love to see a AAR of your campaign - battles to get a feel of the game.

There is video of the mod for Gettysburg. The new game is 100% better. Looks better and plays better. The regimental AI isn't stupid and will now form squares and send out skirmishers.

Here is an AAR not written by me but its good! See post 11! It has some video of myself leading a charge of Polish light horse (Soon to be Polish Lancers!)

I have tons of pictures. It's especially fun to pop out an entire Corps hidden in a swale of ground teheheh. You see hundreds of couriers riding around as the mass attack is reported up the chain of command! lol

Oh, did I mention communication is done via written courier.... oh yes you have to write orders to each other UNLESS you ride next to your intended recipient-then we use teamspeak.

Fog of War is king.

Oh I and I forget, a very cool new feature in this game is that when one regiment routs it causes a moral check with the surrounding regiments and based upon the degree of danger can cause multiple regiments to rout. If you have an untested division and it is suddenly attacked on the flank you're likely to have a full division in headlong flight with panic spreading. It's cool but you really have to watch where you put your weaker formations: a brigade of conscripts can sweep away veteran commands when they break (luckily they rally).

Also, regiments do a moral check when they advance-so if you charge an enemy regiment there are three outcomes: 1) Your charge is successful and you and the opposition touch bayonets (extremely unlikely), 2) your regiment charges until 50-60 yards and fails its moral check, causing it to stop and trade fire with the Defenders (most likely), or 3) your regiment OR the Defenders fail their moral check and break and run (somewhat likely).

It all adds to the realism.
