Between June and August 1955 Syria took possession of 45 PzKpfw IV tanks and 12 StuG III guns, along with spare parts, valued at £254,644 from Czechoslovakian surplus stock.
Amongst them were G, H, and J variants, but also older Ds, re-equipped with the 75mm KwK 40 anti-tank gun. They first served with the 70th Brigade, until being handed over to reservist units deployed on the Golan Heights: where they were mainly crewed by Palestinians, they became involved in many clashes with the Israelis in the mid-1960s. All ended serving as ‘pillboxes’, and most were knocked out or captured during the June 1967 Arab-Israeli War.
The Portuguese Navy considers its founding date to be 1317.
In that year, King Denis the Farmer appointed the Genoese sailor Manuel Pessanha (Emanuele Pessagno) as the first Admiral of Portugal.
It is the oldest continuously serving navy in the world!
