CMBS ALby Round #2 Match Ups

3 battles are completed, here is where the rest of you sit

44,40,33
25,20,20,18

8 (OK, this battle needs to get your act together., Consider this a warning, You two need to get exchanging files)

Just a reminder, if I see a player consistantly slow and not managing a decent turn rate. I do invite them a exit from my Tournaments

18 had a baby (congrats jackal!) but they are now moving along nicely. we also have a 20 that is on hold for a planned vacation, and they will resume a fast turn rate when they return.

8 has a hardware issue we are working thru. please stand by.

I played ALby this Battle and I think it is very well done.
Now that I see some comments and results of Battles, I know of only one tweek that would be of any use to the design.
But it is as good as any scenario I have ever seen.
Aye I’d concur - I really enjoyed this had a bit of everything!

I just want to play with modern weapons and experience some ‘different’ PBEM action.

I realize it’s not for everybody and some people who like tournament play don’t know the weapon set here. To those folks i say good for you for mixing it up like Vikings despite the disadvantage. That shows character and I like that.

I will offer anyone in that situation an 30 min instructional’ PBEM and we can help you get some real world targeting experience with the drones and aircraft. They really are a lot of fun. :)

I will get better as I do more of these and one thing I’m adding to future match is an emphasis on making the WW2 skills to count as much here as the WW3 skills. I’ve learned this from watching some really brilliant strategies play out on these matches I designed. The more you guys exploit these things the better the matches we can make. This one is waaaaay better than our first match, which has been adjusted to fix many of its flaws based on your comments. I’ll release the whole set when we are done.

Yes. I need to think about that one. A very smart player did something very smart and got very lucky. I need to look that all over and chat with his oppo before I change it up. I have played or seen 20 games here and 1 instance of that being successful. But I am equally unsure about what oppo was doing or thinking. All I can say is many players here are ingenious and have a very high level understanding of the game. lol

That's definitely not me. Maybe its just not knowing the modern titles, or maybe that my work schedule has me unable to focus, but I have no 'feel' for these matches. If it weren't a Sly tournament I would probably surrender as this has gone pear-shaped from turn 1.

I appreciate the effort to hang in there when a battle is not going your way, it is presently the only way to make it right for the opponant that might be having a very enjoyable time crushing your efforts.

But I have actually learned it is a good trait builder to oneselve to hang in there and see it to the end even when it is a mess.

I know for myself when I find myself in such a situation. I find ways to still enjoy the battle still even if the outcome is going to be poor.

I set goals for myself as to what I see I might still be able to do.

Example: I have a squad of men left, they have one round for a bazooka and they are going to be run over by a platoon of infantry in halftracks.
No I am not going to win this battle, but I can make a goal to take out at least one Halftrack and gun down its occupants. If I do it, I have won a litle battle for me, if I do better, I am pumped for over adcheiving , if I do poorer, I can say to myself, well what did you expect.

So see, no matter what. I am enjoying it. Some of the battles I enjoy the most are the ones I am really challenged and struggling in.

This is why I approached sly with this idea. Thank god for this brand and our fearless leader. Nobody would have played or stuck with it were it just me.

Hang in there OPO. The next match might be the best one you ever had. I’m getting better at these. The WW2 and WW3 skills are not mutually exclusive and I’m figuring this out and how to integrate them. ;)

Aye I think the biggest takeway from the series you've ran @SlySniper is the concept of fighting a no-win situation in a scenario 9which may be inherent due to the nature of the fight) but striving for these small localised 'victories' and seeking to erode your opponents victory margin! Defo builds a useful mental skill set for dealing with setbacks - 'Keep on , keep on fighting'.

We've made it to half-way, OPO. I wouldn't be too despondent - it's certainly not been one-way traffic, you've inflicted a fair amount of pain on my pixeltrup! But what i like about these tournaments is that you're not just up against your head-to-head opponent; it's how well you score compared to the other players on the same side. Always something worth fighting for.

Exactly. It keeps you engaged and trying to have some success. It really helps to enjoy the games that you loose. I used to tell kids I helped coach that if you cannot have some fun loosing you need to change you mind set because even the best players don't win all the time.

Frankly cultivating that skill can have pay offs you don't expect. I have had more then one game where things were going marginal and I was having trouble getting things done - doing that focusing on things you can do and digging for small victories - has lead to victories I didn't think I was going to have.

Yeah, I try to find the small victories in the middle of defeat, too. This one just has me annoyed because I'm not bringing my A-game. Things like missing LOS problems (and opportunities), forgetting to do X on my turn. I'm rushing my turns, and it shows when you aren't strong on the core modern systems. There's a few things that haven't worked the way I planned or thought they would (not unit-specific stuff, more general engine stuff). That, and a couple of things happened really early on that just made me want to move past this one.

The 7 stages of Combat Mission Grief:
1. Shock: What the frak is happening?
2. Denial: I read the briefing. My plan is good. It's just a few CM spotting bugs.
3. Anger: Frakking ALBY made a shite scenario. It's his fault.
4. Bargaining: If I can just kill X, this will go a lot better.
5. Depression: I can't even kill X. I suck at CM.
6. Adjusting: What can I do with these 2 AFV crew guys and a few grenades?
7. Acceptance: OK, its a game. I am playing my favorite game, but let's get it over with.

Moving from stage 5 to 6. :)

Would that relate to the two big minefield explosions that I noticed going off on turn 1 & 2? I’m desperate to know what got disabled/KO’d….
