CMRT - first impresions

I was not expecting a new graphics engine with RT. So, I was not disappointed by "more of the same." In fact, I rather like the overall color palette used in RT. It is more muted than Normandy.

Along those lines, I like the terrain included in RT. The wooded areas are quite dense and can create some interesting close quarter fighting. I noticed that Battlefront included both "Russian" and "Eastern European" terrain but have not yet become familiar enough with the differences.

I think someone realised that CMBN Normandy terrain was a little 'bright on the eyes' somewhere down the track. As for the negative comments about graphics, I think BF realise that lots of people are going to be using mods to replace pretty much everything anyway so may spend a little more time and effort on other matters. Saying that, Aris is starting to pump out vehicles. :D

Have you checked out the new JuJu UI mod? It is freeking awesome

JuJus UIs are such an improvement! They are absolutely essential!

During my last QB I remarked that some spots of the ground caught fire. I guess by tracers.

That sounds like a car company selling unpainted cars and expecting the customer to happily finish them.

I hate to agree with Septic Limb but it does seem a lot like an expansion pack. QB maps appear a little too similar, scenarios are too few, and not enough unit options. Still the same frustration (LOS) from CMBN and CMFI. Also some new ones (cant enter some buildings, units missing from qbs, pathing/moving in forests). I hope the next patch fixes it. Fortunately the modding community has already began to produce some nice mods.

@nathangun I maybe shouldn't say this, but (and I may just be lucky with my setups and distances) but so far I seem to think the lack of a radio doesn't stop Russian Hq's from calling in fire... Or at least it keeps working for me - I think they must just shout very loudly - or is it yet another glitch fubar from the brilliant chaps at Battlefront.

Be interested to know if anyone else has managed it...

I may be wrong (won't be the first time ...), but it has always been this way, not just in RT.

The way I *think* radios work is:
- for on-map units, if you are too far away for voice and visual contact, you need a radio: full stop.

- for off-map units (i.e. communicating with higher level arty formations, that would never be present on a CM-scope battlefield), the comms network is supposed to represent / be an abstraction of other forms of comms like pre-laid landlines back to higher HQs, and the use of runners.

So the absence of a radio (though, which you can also get by being near a radio carrying vehicle ...) does not absolutely rule out calling in off map arty missions by an appropriate level HQ ...

Not sure if that helps or not ...:)

I really like CMRT. I was playing a CMBN turn today and lit up. Pz IV with a Sherman and zoomed in to see where the hits were only to realize there are no decals in CMBN. Yet.

Russians play differently and suit my bludgeon approach quite well. Now if I could just get some PB Dropbox going...

I love this game :D

This is a turn from the Angriff scenario that I'm playing with @Dutch Grenadier.
This my first time trying out Fraps, as I only have the demo.

In this video, I've notice for the first time ever in a CMx2 game, the crew loading shells into the breach of a ATG. Awsome !

Check out this air strike

Good videos mate

Thanks for sharing

@nathangun Great post mate, my epiphany was realising that my MG34 team were stopping to change barrels - awesome to see that detail.

I must get some sort of video record (I am on Mac) because the other day - also in an Angriff scenario I saw a round take out two Sdkfz 234's which were parked close together - hit decals show the 4 entry and exits and you can see the round bury itself further down the trail...

As you say - you gotta love it...

OK guys, I just finished the Soviet campaign and so here are my two cents though regarding CMRT.

Overall, I really do like it although it took me some time to be accustomed to it. Graphics are OK (although I agree that some textures might be improved), numerous troops to choose from, and a few minor bugs including the missing vehicles and troops from QB purchase screen. Still that bloody LOS/LOF problem (during the campaign I was unable to return fire at bloody Germans shooting at me due to lack of LOF).

(Beware, minor spoilers)

My feelings are mixed as regard to the Soviet campaign. Too many traps in these scenarios so they seem a little bit unrealistic. Clearly, some scenario was designed to kick your ass: enemies organized at the millimetre to limit LOS, unrealistic artillery accuracy, and of course a limited time count with large maps (I know this later point is quite historically accurate). Oh, and some strange “trigger events” causing some German slaughter and only meant to make lose some time (which they did succeed in)… I was so sorry for these pixeltroopen.

I eventually finished being accustomed to the Russian style (something like “give them hell, use enough men, go forward and stop thinking on flanking every specific chokepoint”). Honestly, meanwhile I understood how this bloody “assault” order is working.

Here it is, now I think I will start searching for QB opponents

PS: @nathangun : great videos mate !
