In 1687, during the Morean War, the Venetians besieged the Acropolis of Athens which was held by the Ottomans who used it as a gunpowder store.During the siege the Venetians managed to hit the Acropolis with a spectacular mortar shot which caused a massive explosion and killed around 300 people, causing immense destruction and permanently changing the Acropolis, as the entire roof was torn off - such was the power of the explosion of the Ottoman gunpowder store! What was left of the Ottoman garrison tried to hold on but capitulated after the relief army was repulsed by the Venetian forces, demoralized and in a hopeless situation. The reactions to the explosion and the destruction of the Acropolis varied. Otto Wilhelm Königsmarck, a German nobleman in Venetian service, was greatly dismayed by the destruction of this ancient temple. By contrast Francesco Morosini, who was the commander in chief of the operation, described it in his report to the Venetian government simply as a "fortunate shot", seemingly ecstatic about the glorious conquest of the Acropolis. At the end of the day, it's worth pointing out that the Acropolis had been well preserved until then. Its ruinous state today was not caused by the ravages of time, but by powerful Venetian mortars!

My father-in-law was the wing commander and he’s flying the first plane. Just after the end of WW2, he was stationed at Oakland Alameda Naval Air Station.

Can any of you experts identify the model of airplane?

And yes … that is the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge.
