F-82 Twin Mustang

Another kit I put together pretty quick....its an old 70's Monogram kit that doesn't fit especially well, but it's not too bad. 1/72 scale

The Twin Mustang was originally supposed to escort Superfortress bombers on their longest ranged missions, but the war ended just as it was being deployed. However, in its night fighter guise, it served well in the Korean War, and actually scored the first aerial kills of the conflict.

My model is an F-82G night fighter....all the radar equipment is in the bulbous torpedo-like appendage extending forward from the centre wing. It makes a distinctive and very unusual subject.

US aircraft of the time used quite pristine gloss finishes, so mine is fairly shiny. There is a little bit of pre-shading underneath, but you can't really see it in the photos.

Photos are a bit grainy...might see if I can do some better ones.

Never heard of the Twin Mustang until now, an interesting plane and a nice model. The blue almost looks black, or is it black? Can pick out quite a bit of detail on the body and wings of the plane, it looks a pretty decent kit, I wonder what the P-51 pilots thought of this amalgamation?

AIR WAR IN KOREA. A fond farewell from his family, sends Capt. Johnnie Gosnell of Borger, Texas, off on another mission over Korea. Waving goodbye on the field near their home are Bill, 6, Sharon, 5, and Mrs. Gosnell. Gosnell is a pilot flying with the 68th All-Weather Fighter Interceptor Squadron at an advanced U.S. Far East Air Forces base in Southern Japan. He's getting ready here to take off in his twin-engined F-82 Mustang. (circa November 1, 1950)

It's black....it's a night fighter. I should really have sanded down the surface detail a bit, but I decided that given a black paintjob it would help make the detail more visible if I left it.

My feeling is that the model doesn't really capture the shap of the nose very well, and the canopies are a bit suspect, but other than that its ok.

Apparently the pilots liked it. That's a fast plane; real long range too.
