In light of recent discussion, I am opening this thread so that we can develop a set of 'House Rules'. To that end I will start off with a simple question...Do you feel that FGM would benefit from a set of 'House Rules'?

1. Yes
2. No

Depending on the communities response to the 1st question, we can decide if we need to work on this or not.
Poll will be up for several days (at least 3).

Besides the house rules players are still able to discuss any rules between them selfs of course?

Oh contraire DG. In keeping with the protocol instituted by most western governments over the past few years you will be told exactly what to do and how to do it. The collective knows what is best for the proper disposition of the ways and means of conducting a civilized game and no deviation from said rules will be tolerated.

This will include what is permissible to eat and drink during such games and what clothing is demanded. (no more sitting around in underwear) To insure compliance each member will be required to have a mini cam operating during such games to be monitored by the Department of Game Civility. Any infractions will be duly noted and fines will range from having incoming arty on setup to facing a battalion with only a jeep. All games being ladder reported.

I would be of a mind that the players are always the final arbiters of what rules to incorporate in their game. The house rules would be the framework upon which the negotiations for change would be based. That is to say, if both players agree to 1st turn arty, then it would be allowed. However, barring any pre-game arrangements, the 'House Rules' would prevail. I would say that the only sanctions available in the event of failure to follow 'House Rules', would be forfeiture of the ability to report the game on the Ladder/Tourney.

I totally agree...

I like the idea of House Rules. As a relative noob to FGM, I was surprised to learn that they didn't already exist.

What, You may wear underwear during a game???

I would say let´s try us the house rules! If they don´t work we can take them back yet.

I'm not quite sure how having a set of house rules would differ all that much from what we have now. Either people can agree on certain things or they can't (like prep arty during the first turn). If two players don't agree on the house rules for whatever reason, they're either gonna modify those or discuss how to handle things anyway.

Question is: Would you make them mandatory for all "official" games, tournaments/campaigns inlcuded? Will every game be forfeit that sees a player - even accidentally - overstep the rules? How do you enforce and/or control adherence to those rules? Frankly I don't see the need - I have never ever played with house rules and the need for special rules has never arisen.
If an opponent uses first turn arty, so be it - I can do the same. If I'm stupid enough to put my men where it's most obvious to put them, my problem. On the other hand I ususally don't play QBs (or any ladder match for that matter) in which the whole map gets plowed by arty just for the sake of winning yet another ladder game, so I'm probably the wrong candidate for this one anyway.

First, thanks for presenting another side of the coin, it always helps to have an advocate for another perspective.
Now to answer your question...
It is apparent from various conversations on our forum, that first turn arty, on or near assembly areas in MEs, has been a concern of many players here in the FGM. With the current system in place, it is a recurring issue. Now you could say that's my own fault for not negotiating the problem away. However, in all my games here at FGM, only one opponent has used the tactic on me, and left an awful bitter taste behind. Im requesting that we institute the 'House Rules' so that in my desire to get a game underway, my inadvertent forgetfulness about this issue, does not wind up in a game destroyed because of an opponents gaminess, inadvertently or on purpose. As for the setting up in an obvious location is my problem, how is that so, when the game determines where the start-up areas are? You see that's where the gaminess shows up, as your opponent knows where you start (generally) and is willing to pound that area for the advantage it will render him.
Now The FGM is a club of mates who are supposedly friends. We come here for the camaraderie and the fellowship primarily. Anything that detracts from our experience here, is of concern to all of us. Now my opponent in the circumstances that brought me to bring this up, has expressed that he was unaware of this as a problem and agreed to refrain from using the tactic in the future, which is good on him. Had we a set of 'House Rules', that would be required reading to participate in Ladders and Tourneys, we would have a remedy at hand. Failure to play by the rules, disqualifies the game from being reported. No more, I'm a new guy and didn't know.
The reasoning behind having 'House Rules' is not to dictate to the membership, but instead, to have a tool at hand that helps us avoid unpleasant occurrences that detract from our experience here.

Yes, he answered my e-mail in the same manner. My e-mails to him, while pointed, were very diplomatic.
Personally I consider him a 'Shark' anyway, as it was all about the ladders to him, not the club.
