"The Darvaza gas crater also known as the Door to Hell or Gates of Hell, or, officially, the Shining of Karakum, is a burning natural gas
field collapsed into a cavern near Darvaza, Turkmenistan. The floor and especially rim of the crater are illumined by hundreds of natural gas
fires.
The crater has been burning for an unknown period of time, as how the crater formed and ignited remains unknown...". - Wiki

So, a big fire hole in the ground?

Not sure whether this belongs here, or in the "What are you listening to right now", but.....
A small group of people built this from scratch. Every cog is laser-cut plywood, the dimensions of which were trial and error. Then there were the steel balls accidentally magnetizing and throwing off the timing.
Then figuring out how to time the entire thing while still getting 99.99% accuracy of all the working parts.
I'm not sure whether this is the coolest thing I've ever seen, but it's certainly in the top ten.
Rube Goldberg would've loved this.
