I think in the main it werent communists but socialists - if something at all. And by the way - that are "Kampfgruppen der Arbeiterklasse" (in english: combat groups/brigades of the workers class). That was, if one might say so, the Volkssturm of the GDR (German Democratic Republic - known as East Germany). To the time of the construction of the wall these were the 100% confident socialists - not only nominal. They made this by conviction to do the right. They not even got payment for their duty. Only if one was member for 25 years and more one got 100,- Mark more pension/benefits. Whatever one may think of them I don´t belief You will find guys here anymore who would willingly risk their lifes for their fatherland and conviction - and all that without payment. For this patriotism/attitude they have my respect. But in the end they were sold down the river as all others.

Greetings

Sylvester Stallone embraces East Berlin nurse Liane Suendermann at West Berlin’s Checkpoint Charlie on 9 June 1988. Suendermann escaped from East Berlin to the West on 27 May by hiding out with a fake passenger seat in a Mini car.
Stallone said: ″It just goes to show how important human rights are, and what people will go through to be free.″
