On Aug 24, 1961, Günter Litfin (24) was shot dead by members of the police during his attempt to escape to West Berlin by swimming from Humboldthafen, a small port on the Spree River.
On Feb 6, 1989, Chris Gueffroy (20) was the last person to be killed at the Wall during an escape attempt.
