The Borscht Wars CM Black Sea Campaign

At this scale it would have to be abstracted in a simple way like the aircraft rules that Ithikial posted above.

I totally agree. It would have to depend on how artillery is looked at the operational level before being converted into artillery available for the current tactical engagements.

Ran a few tests this morning -- one can actually play out the air strikes against SP artillery.

Set up a 20 minute scenario on a medium map with some tree cover.

Unkrainians:
Two batteries of 6x Shturm ATGM vehicles stand in for the SP artillery units (probably rated at similar armor protection)
There'll be an HQ vehicle or two, and half a dozen ammo supply trucks.
... all this hides under tree cover, reasonably well dispersed.
Also added a pair of SAM launcher vehicles (Tunduskas). -- usually posted more exposed as they need arcs of fire.
(above all Regular quality)

Opp force (Russian) gets a pair of Air Controllers hidden out of sight on map as a technicality (otherwise air strikes can't be called in)

They call in on first turn 6 assorted ground attack aircraft (planes at Veteran level) as area attacks on suspected enemy positions with cover ... then the fun starts.

First test -- within minutes 4 attacking jets were shot down...LOL ... only two trucks were hit.

Second test -- 1 jet lost, 3 "SP guns", the HQ vehicle and two trucks destroyed...

Third test -- both SAM vehicles taken out, two jets lost ... 2 "sp guns" taken out.

If under intense AA fire, some pilots will abandon the attack or spend more time evading than attacking...

But looks like SAM vehicles are deadly...

A bit more of a sneak preview of the fictional Borscht Island War in development (very very slow going here  )... nearly completed map with suggested location and natural features names... still not decided what the two small ictional countries that share Borscht island are called... :D

Here same map with suggested armies of both sides ... each formation based on a Btn Tactical Group (2x Tank, 1x BMP Mech Inf, 1x BTR Mech Inf) ... each formation is colour coded to make it easier to see component units.
There are also Air Support counters, Attk Helicopter units and possibly independent SAM units and a couple of heavy artillery batteries.
(the final naming of each Battalion can be decided on by each side once the campaign starts ... one day... in a galaxy far, far away...) o_O

Ok, now back to real work!! (sound of cracking whip!!)

Been thinking about maybe creating some action or event cards that can add random events into the war and /or allow players to throw curve balls into the campaign... maybe some diplomaticy/political aspects to it.

Could be intelligence/code breaking coups, random events or delays... still thinking... thinking...

We need to chat. :) Already working on something...

Would love to see some of your ideas.

Am in process of working up ideas and then stripping them down to the simplest workable solution again.

The intention is for a simple replacement & unit purchase system based on production points of the cities/towns.

There's be a simple shopping list for each side's commander to decide which units to replenish or rebuild ( it'll be quite expensive, so as to not make it too easy)

Air war, artillery and supply will be abstracted.

OOB's of component units are standardised, so that'll make setting up of battles quicker.

Also thinking or pre-assigning existing QB maps to various hexes -- that might speed up things as well.

Been tinkering with idea of little unit insignia "mod packs" that can be temp installed for every formation in the Borscht Wars as players play the battles.

Here a shot from the "Eastern" country army which will fight with Russian kit... ("Western" army will have Ukrainian kit -- maybe some US "advisors')

BMP-2's and T-72's of the Iron Fist Battalion...

TENSIONS on BORSCHT Island are reaching boiling point!

Negotiations have broken down. UN & US peace envoys are flying out after fruitless talks.
White House spokesman accuses Russian delegates of "meddling".

Border troops & air force units on both sides are on high alert!

Ambassadors have been recalled and embassy buildings are being closed down!

Unconfirmed reports in western media of reservists from both armies being called up!

Both governments deny mobilising and issue statements that the other side's provocations cannot remain unanswered!

Who will fire the first shots?

(time to finish typing up the rules for this baby ... and finalise the forces ... holding thumbs this weekend will play ball :)
