The Forgotten Battle for Overloon

Hey Rick,

I already made the OOB's and placed the units on the map. All that needs to be done now is to script them but I don't know how to :(

You need to assign each unit to a Group (A1-A16)... This is done in the purchase unit screen with the F1-F8 keys.... The groups should be made up of units that will perform the same orders during the battle.... Once that is done, then you need to address the Orders for each Group during the battle... Up to 16 Orders can be given to each Group... Plus with Engine 3.0 you can add Triggers to orders... ie If enemy crosses line A trigger Group 4 to go from hiding to Ambush at 150m, bla bla bla... there is a ton of variables... Plus you can have up to 5 different plans of 16 Groups with 16 orders.

Needless to say without the designers knowledge of who is doing what and why (The designers Battle Plan) it is hard for someone else to create the battle... Also I find the Scripting to be the most difficult part of creating the battle.... A small battle with say 3 Plans, 5 or 6 Groups, 10 Orders per Group, could take upwards of 3-4 hours to create... Then it all must be tested in 'Author Scenario Test Mode' or else you could end up with some funky looking troop action...

When I first started I took a small map, put a platoon on it vs a platoon, created a group of one platoon... plotted some orders, and then tested it to see what the different commands do... Once you have the Routine done, the tools are fairly simple to use, but the ability to develop a plan (What groups are doing what in concert with other Groups, etc) takes the time...

Hope this Helps...

When I go to AI in editor I see the map. Then what?

First you have to setup the Groups in your Purchase Screen for OOB.... you do so by selecting unit and hitting F1-F8 (9 = Twice F1, 10 = F2 twice)

Then those are the groups you will see under Plan 1 - 5... it is explained pretty good in the manual in about 10 pages (Page 94-103).... Spend ten minutes reading pages... and you should be able to do a basic setup for a Group and understand the tools... then it is repetitive to all groups with what ever orders you want to give...

LOL you uncovered my basic problem... I should read the manual more often ;)

I personally found the following links well worthwhile.

Jon Sowden's written narrative describing the creation of his Market Garden scenario.
Especially helpful is the "map overlay" instruction.

Excellent multi-part tutorial videos by "Proambulator"

I'm trying to learn scenario design myself. After many false starts (way too ambitious initial ideas), I am in the middle of scripting my first AI plan. Expect to fall on my face long and often before obtaining something sensical. Good luck and good gaming!

Thank mate and good luck yourself. I find it really difficult.
I'm glad doh that the new vehicle update is here. i can use crapflail tanks in this scenario

I find it really hard this scripting stuff so I would like someone to help me script or script it for me.

pretty please.... :D

Don't underestimate yourself. Here's another instructional video from Proambulator. Take a look and it should start to make sense. Break the AI side down into no more than 16 groups. Create orders for each group. Time those orders against the scenario clock. Try it one group at a time in Test Mode. Take it slow until all the pieces come together.

Combat Mission AI Triggers (Basic) Tutorial

Good luck!

Thanks Badger. I have some other project wich I'm working on but I'll get this finished someday :)

With the arrival of CMFB I can finnaly finish this project. Although I have to start over from scratch but I now have the correct timeperiod.

The map that is... The Brits haven't made their way to CMFB yet :(

Nope. Some sneaky people over at the BF forums have learned how to transfer CM maps between one game to another. (Mostly for CMRT -> CMBS at the moment). Probably worth talking to them first. :)

I want to start over. Not happy with the other map.

I remember visiting the museum at Overloon as a boy - fantastic place.

It is! I live about 20km from Overloon. I visit the museum very often.

Hello Dutch Grenadier
Do you know of any players who have started or completed a Combat Mission map of Overloon? If not, I would like to give it a try but need help finding exising references. I am a 70 year old Dutch-Canadian born in Amsterdam who would like to make this my final project in remembrance of the allies liberation of Nederland. My previous large scenarios were 'Gruppe Bohm to le Rocher', and 'Bloody Buron Overhaul'. I think a guy named Brahm had started a project but I cannot seem to find him.

Cheers,

Kandu (Wim)

Have been to the museum at Overloon - think it was around 1970 when my dad was in the army
Brilliant museum!
