CM:Battle for Normandy General Discussion

I have not mastered, nor attempted, to do a screen shot..

Just hit the Printscreen key on your keyboard and Paste it into your Windows paint program to save it.
If anybody wants to do that, send the saved pic to me in an email and i'll post it for you.

The game was very slow in loading for me and the textures crawled onto the screen at the start so I've just invested £65 on an OCZ 30GB solid state drive (SSD) which I will use just for gaming, it'll be interesting to see how much difference it makes. I just timed the Roadblock training scenario and it took just under 40 seconds to load from the last selection screen to the briefing screen, and once the game was running the grass & tree textures took another 10 seconds or so.

The installation went smoothly, load time for the same scenario is now 25 seconds and textures are noticeably quicker to load, so much so that I can smoothly zoom around the map with all settings on maximum which I couldn't do before. I'll try installing Arma 2 on it sometime too which should improve its notorious tree graphic bottleneck if it has the same effect. My processor is a quad core Q6600 running at stock 2.40 Ghz, graphics card is an Nvidia GTX 275.

Here's part of a mail I just got from Battlefront offering me a free review copy of CMBN, I see they regard FGM as an "elite group"..:)

"I have final review copies (based on release code)
available, both as hardcopy via mail (if required) and as download (or
both).
If you are interested, I have a small stock of the SteelBook(tm) Limited
Edition available as well for a few selected publications (and if you are
reading this, then you belong into this elite group ;-))."

Please don't tell them again how you'd do everything different and better else you get one day regarded as a second Dorosh... :tongue1:

And DON'T ask for features that aren't even possible with the new engine (like dinamycally enhancing the size of the units ingame) - that'll just make you look stupid.

We're talking about a game, not the unchangeable Ten Commandments written in stone, so I'm sure the CMBN programmers have the power to change the code in future upgrades if they wanted..:)
As for Dorosh, he once contacted me with a view to publishing a CM tactics book (he said he owned a small publishing company), but when he said he wouldn't be allowed to include any of my tac screenshots in it because of possible copyright problems with BFront, I lost interest and pulled out.
I mean, a book without my stunning screenshots would have made about as much sense as a guide to art masterpieces without any pictures in it!

That's not quite my point - some things will just never happen because they have changed for a very good reason (like target indicators or size increase for units). It would only show you have neither seen the feature list nor udnerstoof why feature X or feature Y is and works. I just want to spare you that because I know you can get emotional at times. :biggrin1:

I've got no beef if a change makes things better, but there's a list of things in CMBN that could be changed in future releases.
You seem to be saying that the programmers haven't the skill or motivation to change them..:)

In fact I was working with wargame programmers 25 years ago at CCS to help them develop their stuff and getting paid for it, here are 3 of my babies, I've been around-

HeHe, guess u won't be needing the copy u paid cash for, and just a few days after you bought it......thats brutal! They do say that timing is everything.......

No, but they won't put stuff back in that hasn't been there since CMSF. If BFC judged those features essential, they'd never have done away with them, don't you think?

Today i got my steel Box with the CD and the game manual .It does look neat.
The steel case has 3 more DVD slots so we can talk for at least 3 more modules :)

The CMBN coding could do with a few tweaks, but if BF don't want to do it in future expansions, it's none of my business..:)
Matrix tweaked the Pz Command series coding for their new PC:Ostfront and included several ideas of mine which I suggested to them (trees full off toggle, Reactive phase 'off 'option etc)

I came clean and told BF I didn't need a review copy after all because I'd already bought the game (sniffle), so presumably they won't send me one now

Your a good man POS, but then again, what good would two copies of CMBN do for ya? It's not like you could get some schmuck to buy a copy for more then BF is charging and make a couple of bucks back plus what u spent for it in the first place.

Ha ha, Bfront insist on sending me a copy regardless, so I suppose I'll be giving it away in another future FGM Game Giveaway..:)
Here's their email i just got-

"Actually, you are all set as is. I manually approved your order, so you'll
get a hardcopy by mail."

LoL, thats pretty nice of them though. I almost hope you don't put it up for the raffle since my "take a chance" button in the brain would prevent me from buying it cause I could have the chance to win it. I wouldn't want to end up in the same circumstance as you, with two copies of the best game ever ;)
