So Slitherine got back to me yesterday, and advised me to turn off 'Controlled Folder Access' which didn't work. I reinstalled the games and that hasn't worked.

It sounds suspiciously like it could be your firewall /antivirus protocol but I wouldn't know where to start. If it were on steam, I'd try opening steam as administrator but you mentioned it wasn't steam...
Rejoice! I got it working.
The lad over at Slitherine tech support told me to delete a file in AppData/Local/Temp folder call bla bla... I couldn't open the file as the folder was 'hidden' so I gave myself permission to open it and somehow it worked.
