Operation Konrad - Round 1 General Thread

Quick note, guys: I realized that I posted the wrong version of the Balatonfokajar map in the DB. For...reasons...I have both a Mac and a Win10 CMRT install on the same Mac, and for...more reasons....I do scenario work in both. I had uploaded the wrong final version. I believe the only difference is that the German set-up zone was moved forward a few meters and the Soviets moved back.

Regarding the maps for this round:
All of the Budapest maps are my own creation, based off maps and a few photos.
The Tokod/Sugar Factory map is my own creation, based off period maps. This was the site of the first serious challenge to the Op Konrad I northern flank advance.
Osi and Zamoly were modified from CMRT stock maps, based on having similar terrain to the real locations.
Balatonfokajar and Tolna were cut from CMRT Master Maps of the real locations. Tolna was modified to "open it up" a bit (Ya shoulda seen it before!).

I test all the maps by doing at least one round of unit purchase and playing a few turns against myself to make sure I can see some valid strategies, that unit density seems appropriate, and that the starting zones include placement options where attackers won't get whacked on Turn 1. That said, I couldn't fully play through 30 maps... so there may be some problems. I have a number of solutions in my back pocket for subsequent rounds, and subsequent playthroughs on the same map if that comes up. I'll use them only if really really needed, and in my mind what "really really needed" looks like is if the Germans get too far ahead or behind historical for the first few Rounds. If that is the case, then one side or the other isn't having fun and in my mind, that is the most important thing. I hope you agree (while wanting to win :) ).

LOVE the discussions so far!!!!!!! I am quite entertained.

only now i see the soviets dont have any reserves on the picture ? or will they come in later

See Table 6:
“Armored Infantry”: PzGrenadier Bn 44 (arm), PzGrenadier Bn (KG), Pz Aufklarung Bn 44, PzGrenadier Bn A (Pz Bde), PzGrenadier Bn B (Pz Bde), PzDiv Escort Coy 44, (may also purchase any halftrack, Armored Cars, SPG, AA vehicles, and/or Trucks)

That's basically the first 10 formations from the top.
I should correct this response to @dkchapuis. It's not the first 10 formations from the top. Only some of them. The motorized ones, the '43 and '45 ones are not allowed.

I will be publishing the match-up details here shortly, with some purchasing-specific information in each sides' private threads.

Set up: Either player, but make sure you double-check the parameters
Passwords: Use the password I gave you via PM.
Dropbox: Please invite me to the Dropbox for your match-up (tfdunganjr@gmail.com)
Deadline: Current target is to have matches complete by June 1 (6 weeks). I'll adjust based on feedback. I know real-life stuff creeps in as we get into Northem Hemisphere late spring and early summer.

Hopefully we'll see some AARs or DARs!

Budapest - Margit Island:
@Cargol @Monty's Mighty Moustache

Margit (Margaret) Island was part of the final defensive positions of Buda, and remained linked to the Western bank of the Danube via the remaining half of the Margaret Bridge. The Germans used it as an aerial supply landing field, and to recover supplies floated down the Danube from upriver. The Soviets crossed the frozen river ice at night and launched a dawn attack that split the island in two. For much of January, the Germans and Soviets fought within earshot of each other from trench positions until the German defenders ran short of supplies and the island was abandoned.

The Soviet 151st Rifle Division is conducting an attack against SS Polizei Regiment 6 (composed mostly of battalions transferred from SS Polizei Rgt 1 before Budapest was surrounded). The Soviets must capture objectives that cut the island in half, and advance against the spa and hotel complexes to the north.

Pilis Mountains - Tokod:
@Brille @Spoogles

After conducting a crossing from the north to the south bank of the Danube on January 1, 1945 which outflanked Soviet defenders along the river bank, the 96th Infantry Division moved east towards Gran (Esztergom). During the night of 2/3 January, the division attacked the Soviet defense erected around the Sugar Factory north of Tokod. The factory and the rail yard was captured by 10am at the cost of 5 StuGs hit by anti-tank fire from the heights to the south.

In this battle, the Germans have achieved operational surprise. The German Sturm-Panzer Abteilung 219 has been deployed along with its accompanying infantry to capture the Sugar Factory and the rail yard, and open the way to Dorog and Gran.

Gerecse Mountains - Tolna:
@Drifter Man @Gorst

The German advance in the Gerecse Mountains was similar to the Battle of the Bulge - panzer formations trying to navigate treacherous, narrow, snow- and ice-covered mountain roads with forests closing in on all sides. Bypassed Soviet units would retreat and hide in the hills, then return for hit-and-run raids on supply lines. The below-standard quantity of German infantry would be the largest problem facing all of the Konrad offensives, as there were never enough troops to secure rear areas while also pushing forward.

Tolna was surrounded and bypassed by the 5th SS Panzer Division during Operation Konrad I on the morning of January 3, 1945, en route to Tarjan. It took two days for follow-on infantry to clear Tolna and make the road network safe for follow-on forces. The Wiking Division spent the day working down the road to Tarjan, where the terrain opened up, losing several officers and panzers in the process.

In this battle, the Germans have achieved operational surprise. The German 6th Panzer Division needs to quickly drive from Tolna to the valley exit near Tarjan.

Vertes Mountains - Zamoly:
@dkchapuis @Aurelius
(Ed: I am looking forward to this one, having played against both of these players).

After weeks of fighting around Felsogalla, the Germans had been unable to break through the Vertes Mountains along the best route of advance, leading to the various Operation Konrad plans to find an alternate route.

Zamoly - north of Stuhlweissenburg - was the site of a diversionary attack by some 100 tanks and AFvs of the 3rd Panzer Division and the I.Kav.Korps on January 7, 1945. This diversion was launched in support of Operation Konrad II in the Pilis Mountains. Although technically a diversion, Hg Sud hoped that the attack might allow the I.Kav.Korps to join up with the IV SS. Pz Korps in Bicske and therefore open up the route toward Budapest.

3rd Panzer had enveloped Zamoly by the end of the day against the 20th Guards Rifle Corps, and reached the road to Csakvar. Over the next 12 hours, 3rd Panzer was counterattacked by multiple tank and mech brigades of the 7th Mech Corps. On Jan 7, the German claimed 30 Soviet tanks and 45 anti-tank guns destroyed; the Soviets claimed 40 German AFVs. Further advance from Zamoly was blocked by a Pak Front and this sector went stagnant until Operation Konrad III where 23rd Panzer Division was able to finally advance to Csakvar.

In this battle, the Germans have achieved operational surprise. The German 23rd Panzer Division needs to secure the main East-West road north of Zamoly, which leads to Csakvar.

Velence - Osi:
@Guardsman @jackal

The area northwest of Osi had been the site of multiple weak, failed German counterattacks in December 1944. For Operation Konrad I, the 1st Panzer Division staged a diversionary attack on Osi on January 1, 1945. The Soviets expected a major counterattack in Hungary in early January, and believed that Osi was the focal point for German operations aimed at Stuhlweissenburg / Szekesfehervar and on to Budapest. As a result, Osi was fortified and there were significant reserves behind it. The Germans captured the town on January 1, but pulled back after a major counterattack. The diversion was successful in pinning Soviet units that could otherwise have deployed north against Konrad I in the Gerecse Mountains.

On January 18, the 1st Panzer Division again assaulted Osi and captured it after breaching significant fortifications and minefields. From there, the 1st Panzer was able to push on the Lake Velence.

In this battle, the Germans have achieved operational surprise. The German 3rd SS Panzer Division needs to secure the main exits from Osi toward Stuhlweissenburg and the key terrain overlooking the rain line.

Puszta - Balatonfokajar:
@Car88 @Bleskaceq

IV. SS-Pz.Korps launched its attack between Lake Balaton on January 18, 1945 as part of Operation Konrad III, with the optimistic goals of reaching the Danube, encircling the Soviet 4th Guards Army deployed west of Budapest, and relieving Budapest itself. The 3rd Panzer Division met light resistance and was able to drive south south-west to the Sarviz Canal on the main axis of attack and the Sio Canal on the operation’s right flank. The 5th SS Panzer Division ran into resistance from the 1st Guards Fortified Region troops in Balatonfokajar, and spent the day clearing out the infantry and machine gun nests from the town before being able to advance to the Malom Canal en route to the Sarviz.

In this battle, the Germans have achieved operational surprise. The German 3rd Panzer Division needs to secure the main exits from Balatonfokajar toward the Sarviz Canal so the offensive can continue.

nice us also put some effort in the historical background looking forward to the game results !

I will be away from my computer for the weekend and will be unable to do any stuff like rules updates, checking maps, etc. I will be able to answer questions via my phone,

One request - As you get started, please do not delete game files. That way I can review when I get back and make sure everything looks correct (and see what you guys have come up with :).)
