Teaser video for CM "Market Garden"

@Strachwitz @Neubaufahrzeug

Ok, I got "Where Eagles Dare" or "The Devils Cauldron" from MMP games off VASSAL ... had a look ... holy shit, are they detailed with an absolutely bewildering variety of unit counters.

Scale is about 400 metres a hex, correct? I see units look like companies/platoons?

Anybody know where I can get a copy of rules just to get an idea what all these units represent?

Scale is 400 metres correct. And units are mostly companies, so perfectly fit CM.

The link Underfire posted provides you with the basic series rules. Sadly the specific rules are not there but reading through the basic rules and also having a look at the Scenario Set-up sheets and other documents there will give you a good overview of the game. I am not definitely sure but I think I read somewhere (here or at BF forums) that mjkerner got a physical copy and knows the game.

I also advice to have a look at the vassal modules as some of the inculded scenarios are already build in. So you can get a feel for the scale of the game and also how it works. I have experimented a lot with it and I think these boardgames would make up for a very good CM campaign op-layer with a few tweaks here and there. Especially the chit-pull activation system could be very interesting as it limits how you can activate and move units across the map. It simulates a chain of command with command delays and could lead to some very interesting situations. This could even lead to have CM Battles with reinforcement over a course of time as movements will be somehow asymetrical....

I have opened up a few of the scenarios and started looking around ... getting a better idea ... I am thinking of combining the map with the campaign system I developed for the Heraklion campaign, which is a lot simpler. (simple rules and counters and a link to the CM OOB's of each unit.
I'll have a look at the rules @Underfire -- thanks for the link.

Basically, a LOT of what the board game system and rules tries to emulate, will be taken care of in the CM battles.

Also, on first impression -- it probably would be better to break up a campaign into smaller sections ... Battle for Arnhem, Nijmegen etc ... otherwise tracking what amounts to 6 - 8 division campaign at company level is insane.

That`s where the smaller scenarios come in handy I think. Some of them have a decent size, covering a smaller timeframe and are better to handle in general. And I think they are somehow balanced to give both sides a chance to score a victory.

I am sure that's an option ... need to study the scenarios more closely.

Each of them could be the base for a small, managable campaign.

The trick is getting a handle on the bewildering number of improvised German Kampfgruppen (Allies are easy ... they are in more formal unit organisations)

... but the more I look at it, I think a lot of the inherent complexity of the base board game will be resolved within the CM battles themselves -- so a LOT can be streamlined.

Just reading how you guys plan this stuff out and how you look at it as a surmountable task, it amazes me that BF either doesn't have a presence here or that we don't have more members from the BF forum. It gets old REALLY fast playing against the AI and h2h scenarios for me is the only way to go. And then you add in these amazingly historical campaigns and I am simply in historical nirvana. To think back to when I was a youngster and reading my world war 2 history books and wondering what it must have been like to be in those battles. Or to be commanding them I should say. While I understand that this hobby that we have is nothing compared to the horror of those events and I wish those things on no one ever again, but we all have the same interest here so I'm sure everyone can relate to my thoughts.

I wish I could figure out a way to make your guys passion a marketable product. There has to be more than 150 in the whole world who have our share interest and passion.

Sorry a little off topic. Just thought about that as I was reading above. In other words I love reading your thoughts and look forward to the next Campaign. Put me down as a player and helper in any way I can.

I'm really looking forward to this. Although as a hardcore German veteran I'm not sure wether I need to switch sides or not... I do want to fight in the Overloon area with some FJ troopers.

The maps are HUGE ... even exporting just the grearter Arnhem area map from Vassal is a 31 Meg PNG .... once in hpotoshop with layers added it starts turning into 70+ Meg working file.

Anyway ... messed around a bit with inserting my own "Heraklion Campaign"-style counters ... and looks pretty good.

Arnhem-campaign-teaser.jpg

-- although to give you idea of scale ... this snapshot is probably less than one tenth or area covered by Arnhem battle area alone (including all the dropzones etc)

The counters are all more or less company-sized units ... the NATO symbol indicating unit type in three different colours ( black, yellow, white) indicating 3 different unit strengths in approximation (more details would be in each company's OOB.

White star indicating Veteran or Crack troops ... like the Paras and for instance KG Moellers 9 SS Pioniere ... while KG Spindler's two companies were made up out of Pz Regt personnel (will enough W-SS troops, but with low infantry skills)

It appears to me that there is a strong desire to get out of the bocage and into the muddy sometimes impassable world of DG's backyard.
