Ardennes Firefight Tourney Archive- for tactical study

While my panzers at '1' are distracted engaging Proniakin's Greyhound down the road, his Sherman 105 at '2' takes the opportunity to saturate my advancing infantry with HE at '3', allowing his infantry at '4' to close in on the flag unopposed..

ANNOUNCEMENT

I've decided to extend the tourney deadline by 2 weeks, so it will now finish at midnight on July 14th (nearly 4 weeks away), or earlier if all games have finished before then.
I'm doing this because players might be following the world cup on TV or taking holiday breaks etc, so a two-week extension will considerably relieve the file-return pressure on them. When I organised the tourney I completely forgot it'd clash with the world cup and the holiday season, duh, so this extension will put it right..:)

GAME 6 of 25 FINISHED
POS v Earl of Grey
Winner Earl of Grey, tactical vic 71%-29%

Armour at start:-
Earl of Grey: 1x Panther, 1x PzIV-long, 3x Stug75-long, 2x Lt armour
POS: 6x Sher75, 1x Stuart, 1x halftrack

We both held a big flag at end, but Earl of Grey racked up big points for armour kills, I lost 5x AFV's but he only lost 1x halftrack.
His Panther at upper left kept 3 of my Sher75's trapped in the top righthand corner for the entire game, sheltering behind a slight ridge.

Whoa... 18 games. I hope my score gave me a big enough head start!

My Sher75's and Bert Blitzkrieg's PzIVlongs go head to head.
(PS- I'm trying out this 'Normandy Winter Sky' mod; it gets rid of the Italian mountains and replaces them with low hills. It's not bad, but the sky's a bit too blue considering it's snowing. Light grey would have been better)

Open lines of sight are a rarity in the densely-forested Ardennes terrain, forcing both sides to carefully stalk each others armour looking for clear shots.
Here, my Sher75's are exposed on high ground as LRC's German armour hunts them down..

POS v Nathangun
Winner POS, tot vic

Armour at start:-
Nathangun: 1x Stug105, 4x Hummel, 1x Grille, 4x halftracks
POS- 5x Sher75, 1x Chaffee, 1x Greyhound, 3x Lt armour

The computer dealt Nathangun a bad hand of mostly Hummels which are useless in a tank battle, but he fought on with them like a man til they were ko'd.
I don't think i'll let the computer pick the forces in future tourneys.

Winner Cargol, minor vic

Armour at start:-
Cargol: 5x PzIVlong, 3x Stug-long, 2x halftracks
POS: 5x Sher75, 2x halftracks

We both lost a lot of tanks early on, then spent most of the rest of the game carefully trying to hang on to what territory we'd got..

Armour at start:-

POS: 5x Sher75, 1x Sher105, 1x Chaffee, 2x halftracks

I took a hard knock with the loss of 3x Sher75's early on, and couldn't scrape together enough remaining armour to effectively get back into the game..

Tank battles erupt on the left flank. Firstly, Mikey's Chaffee pair engage my Stug-long pair at '1'.
So I send a pair of PzIVlongs (2) streaking along the road to help the Stugs.
But they run headlong into an ambush by a mix of Shermans, tank destroyers and Stuarts at '3', resulting in the loss of both the panzers (X'd)
As consolation, my remaining panzer at '4' knocks out a deep-thrusting halftrack..

In a lategame push, I edge my 6x PzIVlongs and a Stug nearer to the flag to consolidate their hold on it, but they run into Breakthrough's Chaffee/Sherman wall and I lose 5 Panzers (x'd) for the loss of only about 2 Chaff/Shers..

Chaffee power, this is the one on the far right in the pic above trading shots with a PzIV..

Hm... I think I might lose my current first place soon the way these games go.

hihi well, I've gone from 2nd to fourth.. and I'm expecting I'll drop a few more as well! ;)

Von Reich's 3x Sher75's attack my 3x PzIV's through the trees, my shots mostly ricochet or only partially penetrate, but his shots strike decisively home, turning two panzers into scrap metal, an example of how 50-50 battles can swing either way. (The 4th panzer was brewed earlier)

POS v Breakthrough
Winner Breakthrough, minor vic

Armour at start:-
Breakthrough:5x Sher75, 4x Chaffee, 1x halftrack
POS:6x PzIVlong, 1x Stug-long, 3x halftrack

Breakthrough broke the tense stalemate by wiping out most of my armour in the final turns to rack up big kill points that outweighed my points for the flag..

Nort's Shermans unceremoniously bundle my Stugs out of town, forcing me to reverse and abandon my infantry up front (circled).
My Stugs were no match for the Shermans in the earlier tank battle, so I'm pulling the survivors back to regroup and hopefully make a counterattack ..

Armour at start:-
Hedgehog: 5x Sher76, 1x Hellcat, 1x Stuart
POS: 5x PzIVlong, 3x Stug-long, 1x halftrack

Both flags stayed neutral but Hedgehog scored big points for killing half my armour early on, then kept the survivors caged behind the buildings, unable to move..
