IL STURMOVIK 1946

P-38 bombing attack v Jap destroyer

I used the 'unlimited ammo' setting but still had to make about 5 passes at the ship before I hit it despite plastering it with about 40 bombs, most of which missed.
Bombs away! (the smoke is from the funnel)

An art difficult to master is bombing, young Padawan... The bombsights on level bombers trying you should...

Absolutely! It is said to be harder in the new patch, but I can still do it reliably so they are just not doing it right ;) I will edit this and post a how to set of pics for you fine folks since skip bombing in one of my favorite things, also there is coffee, my kids, my wife from time to time, and kittens. Stand by.......

Can only certain types of aircraft and certain types of bombs do skipping?
For example none of my P-38's bombs skipped (sniffle)

Very interesting, didn't know about that.
here is something from YT

In Pit view at time of drop

same, but outside, showing distance to target. Look at speed bar for alt and speed.

The first skip, bombs still directly under aircraft. Note distance still needed to hit target

The second skip, just before impact. Bombs will skip twice, on the third they sink unless they hit something. The drop, and skipping, gives the 2 seconds needed before the bombs arm. I also set a 1 second delay fuse so the bombs sit in the ship for 1 second before detonation so I can scram out of there.

..[Marseille] wrecked 4 109E's in his first 7 missions. Granted, most of this was battle damage related, but some of it was being reckless..

It's the nature of most fighter pilots to be reckless cowboys and mavericks and doesn't mean they're no good at flying; rather they simply like pushing envelopes to their limits for fun, and sometimes they don't get away with it.
Marseille certainly like pushing it because it was in his wild unorthodox nature, for example he once landed a 109 on an autobahn to take a pee.
My reading of him was that he was that breed of man who go through life determined to do it THEIR WAY and go against the grain, flaunting and disobeying the rules as much as possible, whether they're a fighter pilot or anything else, and usually end up being successful at whatever they choose to do in life.
For example Rommel had the MY WAY mentality- "I decided to ignore my orders and to take command at the front with my own hands as soon as possible" (arriving in Africa 1941)

A couple of aviation 'My Way' examples- In 'First Light' (I think), Geoffrey Wellum says one of his Spitfire mates (or was it Wellum?) used to go into dogfights with a touch of permanent offset rudder trim so that the plane flew slightly sideways instead of pointing straight ahead, the intention being to confuse an attackers aim.
And in 'Chickenhawk', Huey pilot Bob Mason says he used to waggle his tail when flying into and out of hot LZ's so Charlie would choose to target straight-flying helos in the formation instead.

Skip-bombing tests

Boy was this difficult! it took me an hour of trial and error to get it right at about the 25th attempt, and even then I was using the 'invulnerable' setting to make it easier so I didn't have to put a 1-second fusing delay like Sakai suggested.

1- Bomb away (a 250kg job, circled) against a fishing boat; the two critical release factors are altitude and distance from the vessel; release too high and it explodes when it hits the water, but release too low and it bounces into the ship without exploding because it hasn't had time to arm.
Release too far away and it'll bounce several times without even reaching the ship, but release too near and it won't have time to arm, what a calculation nightmare!
As regards exact release distance from the ship, it's just a wild guess with fingers crossed.
I found a release height of around 50 to 100 feet to be about right (note data readout at bott left)-

2- The bomb hits the water and bounces-

3- Then hits the ship before it can bounce again (yeah I know I almost missed the whole bleddy boat but my excuse is that it was moving)-

SUMMARY- Personally I think skip-bombing is so hard that it's just not worth bothering with because of the hassle of getting the release height/distance to ship/ delayed fusing just right. And it's only worth trying against unarmed ships, otherwise you'd be blown out of the sky on your low pointblank run-in.
So all in all we might just as well do a normal bombing run.

I think in your summary you have hit upon one of the things that makes IL2 a sim like no other. There are a ton of different people that play, and almost every one does so for different reasons. Some are strictly air to air combat types, some are in it for the ability to recreate history, some love to kill tanks and ships, and some love the feeling of bringing down their opponent online. With all these, IL2 has something for everyone. Skip bombing may not be your cup of tea, but one of the main reasons I play. I don't care much for high altitude level bombing, others it's all they do, and then I shoot them down ;) It's great to see all the new interest in the sim lately, as M4T has seen a slew of new members, good times in IL2 land!!!

I do it mostly for the history part, this is why I play dynamic careers with pilots from all nationalities on different planes throughout the war. At the moment I am 1943 in the Kuban region flying fighter for the Luftwaffe...

From my campaign....

Somewhere around Vitebsk, summer of 1944.
Out fighters intercepted Russian attack, and i almost got myself killed.

Bf109 K-4/C3 (3x 30mm canns/2x MG's) v B-17G headon with Realistic gunnery and Limited ammo realism settings.

Unlike my previous tests which were conducted with Unlimited ammo and Non-realistic gunnery, the following test was conducted with Limited ammo and Realistic gunnery.
As before, I had Vulnerability/Pilot Vulnerability 'On' in this one. This is (gulp) the real thing..
Firstly in a pre-test I fired into thin air and timed how long my ammo lasted, the 30mm canns expended after 6 secs and the MG's after 20 secs.
Okay here we go, (my apologies for posting fullsize screenshots but I want to show what it looked like on my monitor screen without any re-sizing or cropping)

The incoming formation is possibly still just a tad too far away, so I hold my fire-
IL-k41.gif

Fire! I'll concentrate solely on the centre boy. I estimate that if I began firing now in one long continuous burst, my 6-seconds worth of 30mm shells should have all slammed into the bomber by the time I scream through the formation. (Incidentally i'm using FRAPS for these screenshots set on 'automatic' to take a pic at 1-second intervals)
IL-k42.gif

2 seconds..
IL-k43.gif

3 seconds..(i'm holding my speed down to around 250mph so I don't zip through the formation too fast before I've given the the terror-flieger the full 6 seconds worth of shells)
IL-k44.gif

4 seconds..amazing, the B-17 fireballs even though the range is still pretty far, I lurv big 30mm shells!
Il-k45.gif

5 seconds..I begin pulling up to avoid a collision even though i've still got about a seconds worth of 30mm shells left-
IL-k46.gif

6 seconds, I'm through without a scratch! And one of the other bombers is trailing smoke, a 30mm shell must have clipped him, or debris from his exploding mate got him..
ILk47.gif

I ran it a twice more to test it wasn't a fluke, and shot down a bomber the first time, and left one trailing smoke the second time, again without a scratch to me or my 109, it was almost too easy.
Don't take my word for it, try it yourselves, just make sure you take up one of the big-hitters packed to the teeth with cannons..:)
(As I say to CM noobs-"Never fear to use heavy weapons, let the fear be your enemies")

I do enjoy your attention to detail. I do enjoy a good run of testing, but since the twins were born I am lucky to have time for a QB run ;) I have always noticed that the G-K series 109 13mm MG ammo lasted a long time, didn't expect 20 seconds tho, very interesting. And 6 seconds for the 30 mike mikes, that is a ton of huge shells to throw out, looks like you were having fun, which is the most important part!

The German MK108 30mm gun fired 10 rounds per second (650 RPM). POS fired in a burst of 5 seconds some 150 shells.

In WW2 on average 5 shells of this gun were sufficient to down a B17 (the 20mm MG151/20 needed around 25 hits) and for a fighter kill one hit was sufficient.

So, POS you should have killed all three B17's ! :biggrin1:

I ve recently purchased this one (for 5 Euros on a sale) and i m allready giving it a try.
I need to buy a stick though.
My skills are so primitive that if it was real i would be usefull only as a Kamikaze pilot :)

Yes since takiing early retirement i've got all the time in the world to do tests in lots of games and sims.
Hands-on testing is the ONLY surefire guaranteed way to find out everything about a game, rather than rely on possibly erroneous or outdated data in the manual (for examp the official IL-2 training mission torpedo release parameters are wrong, plus there's at least one misprint in the patch 4.10.1 official writeup)
And of course, testing cuts right through all the forum bullshit waffle, opinions and guesses that are circulating out there and shoots them down in flames..:)

My stick is a 6-year-old cheap Saitek Cyborg with twist grip for rudder. Any cheap brand will do but make sure its got the twist grip.
And when learning IL-1946, click 'Easy' difficulty.
Fly my simple Buffalo training mission a few times which I posted earlier in this thread and press the keys in the sequence shown..:)
