IL STURMOVIK 1946

I noticed that 109 often does that in left turns on high RPM :)

I'll have to try that then... On hard turns I tend to use combat flaps whenever possible to shorten the turn radius, and until now ( and I have quite a few hours of flight on the 109, it never happened) I don't use a force return stick because I don't find them as precise as standard ones (used to fly Thrustmaster HOTAS when I was flying Falcon 4, now use a Logitech Extreme 3D) so I don't feel the stall warning...

Download a program called IL2 Stab 6.3 (you can find it at mission4today - address in earlier post.)
Use as a launcher to configure all options of IL2 including screen resolution.

One tip only....FOr some reason IL2 stab does not show resolutions higher than 1680x1050, but it gives option to enter it manually...BE carefull not to mix the numbers or IL wont start.

IL-1946 BEGINNERS 5-MINUTE TUTORIAL
Don't bother with the 'Training Missions', they'll mess you up, just follow the sequence below-

1- Select 'Single Missions'
i1.gif

2- Select B-239 N1 (that's the Finnish Brewster Buffalo), then click 'Brief'
i2.gif

3- Don't bother looking at the map or reading the brief. click 'Difficulty'
i3.gif

4- Click 'Easy' (1), then click 'Vulnerability' (2) to turn the light off, then click 'Back' (3).
Don't bother clicking 'Next' for more realism opts.
i4.gif

5- click 'Fly'
i5.gif

6- and you should find yourself airborne in the cockpit. Hit key number '0' to set throttle to max.
(you can program your joystick throttle slider later)
Test your guns with the joystick trigger.
i6.gif

7- hit key 'F2' to go external.
Pan around with your joystick hat.
Zoom in/out with the Delete/End/PgDown keys.
Hit '5' (numeric pad) to reset the view.
You can waggle the joystick to fly from the external view if you like.
(You can also use the mouse to pan/zoom, but I prefer doing it all with the stick and keys)
i10.gif

8- Hit 'F1' to go back into the cockpit.
Hit 'Ctrl F1' to lose the instrument panel. Hit it another couple of times to cycle to a gunsight.
Have fun diving and shooting at stuff.
(The blue arrow is letting you know where your wingman is)
The red figs at bott left are your speed, height and heading
i12.gif

9- Hit 'F7' to go external (you get a better view of your surroundings by panning)
Hit 'M' to toggle the map on/off. You're the white plane (circled). Your mates are blue.
Some red enemies (Russki blighters) are miles away to the south, you can fly down there to have a crack at them in later flights.
NOTE- Depending whether you're Axis or Allies in missions, your colour will be blue or red respectively.
Right-click on the map a few times to enlarge it, and left-click-hold to drag it.
That's your airfield in the 3D view, it's grass but some are concrete.
i14.gif

10- Cut your throttle (key '1' or joystick thrott) and begin gently descending and manoeuvring to land.
If you need more throttle, the keys are '1' (low) to '0' (high)
At about 250 kts hit 'G' to lower your gear, and hit 'V' 3 times to lower landing flaps.
(to raise your flaps for any reason hit 'F' a few times)
i15.gif

11- hit 'F8' to lock chase view so you can line up better with the runway-
i16.gif

12- piece o' cake! Touch down between about 130 and 200 kts (it varies between plane types)
I bounced and veered off the runway and nearly pranged (bad show) but i've got an excuse ready - the dim dawn light and ground mist made me misjudge it, ha ha!
i17.gif

13- If you've landed succesfully and want to try a takeoff, just hit 'F' a couple of times to set takeoff flap, and open the jolly old throttle (or key '0'), or hit 'Esc', and 'Refly' if you want to start the mission airborne, or 'Done' if you need a lie down to calm your nerves-

Haha... POS guide to playing an arcade game with nice looking airplanes... should be a separate thread...lol I love your second degree sense of humour !! Don't bother with training missions...

Anyone can fly in easy mod and external views. I don't see any point in this if you are playing real sim. There are lot of arcade flight games lot better than IL.

I dont think we should ridicule POS for the way he plays the game. The important thing is he is getting enjoyment out of it. I sit in between sim and arcade. Too much simulation takes the enjoyment away for me personally and I like a happy medium. Fair play to the folk who get intensely in to it as a simulator.. Im happy you have found a way to play it that you enjoy and likewise you should be happy that others reap enjoyment from the arcadey aspects... a win win situation.

It is not ridiculing. That's just the way i see it, and if someone plays on that way or any other way, and he is happy with that, it's perfectly ok with me.

I have ordered this game and am waiting for my copy. Many years ago I played an A10 fly game (believe it was called Silent Death). Can't remember if you could enter settings to make flying more or less difficult/realistic.

So, I don't have to much experience in a fly-sim. Therefore I like these little tips POS is given.
And if it turns out I find the level of things to do, control, manage etc to do it most realistically as to high (for me) I won't. It is foremost meant to be fun !

I think there's space for all kinds of levels with games like Surmovik... depends on the time and effort you want to or are able to invest.
I also dabbled with the older version of the game and after lots of hours with the training and being crapped out by the flight leader in Russian for not maintaining formation properly -- not to mention getting killed a LOT trying to learn how not to kamikaze on a carrier landing, I decided I am more the arcade player in this...LOL... each to their own I guess.

Please don't misunderstand me. I always said that every player has the right to play the way he has fun with the thing.
I just pointed out that in that case, we are just not talking about the same thing, and you can't make comparisons like "I don't know why you people are having problems, I learned the whole thing in two days..." when we know ( and it is clearly explained in your post ) that it takes hundreds of hours and an awful number of virtual deaths of all kind to be able to master the thing at realistic level, which is what Zaraza and myself are playing.
There is nothing wrong at playing it arcade style as far as I am concerned, it's just that newbies with 2 days of flying shouldn't try to explain how it's done to people who sweated blood for years to take the best out of it.

Got the game just delivered by mail, but this is making me nervous... I would like to play this game to its full potential, but I fear I lack the determination and patience...

Saw some awesome clips on Youtube from dogfights played in IL2. Guess some practice is needed to reach that kind of level !

@POS : apologies if you felt my posts were hurting you in any way. It has never been my purpose. I confirm I find your tests really enjoyable and I have a blast reading them every time. I am ready to send funds for keeping the secret lab running... lol
And of course yes no pb you can play and have fun the way you like it. It's just that we hardcore simmers get too serious sometimes with our beloved hobby...
