IL STURMOVIK 1946

Amazing that thing could actually fly... the only jet I flew so far is the Me 262 and that's not easy...

Got the game just delivered by mail, but this is making me nervous... I would like to play this game to its full potential, but I fear I lack the determination and patience..!

Don't worry about being a beginner, I've only had the game less than a week myself but can already make my little planes fly around shooting their guns and go wheeeeeee..:)
My sensational beginners tutorial posted earlier will get you quickly into the air, then later you can start clicking assorted preference settings to suit yourself (orange light means 'on')

For example I'd recommend -
Vulnerability on = your plane gets damaged in combat, or your wheels/flaps get ripped off if you lower them at too fast a speed, and if you hit the ground.
Takeoff and Landing on= you start missions on the runway and must take off yourself
Realistic landings= land gently or you might snap the wheels off and cartwheel with bits flying off, or explode
Realistic pilot vulnerability= you could get your ass busted

PS:- to bail out anytime, hit CTRL 'E' (Hit it too after a crash landing in case the kite explodes, to make your guy get out and run like hell)

IL-1946 FULL MISSION BUILDER 5-minute tutorial
(Not to be confused with the 'Quick Mission Builder')
Think of the Full MB as a 'toybox' where you have a clear map on which you can have fun placing planes, ships, tanks, trains, flak guns and objects to your hearts content.

1- Select Full Mission Builder
Ilmb1.jpg

2- Sel File>Load map> Guadalcanal
il-mb2.jpg

3- Note the airfield icons, it's the famous Henderson Field which the Marines pinched off the Japs-
ilmb-3.jpg

4- Zoom in by dragging the left scroll bar down, and drag the map with Left Mouse-Hold.
Click View>Object>Aircraft and select the A-20
(Note: some of the aircraft in the list are not human-flyable, their pilot box is greyed out)
ilmb5.jpg

5- click 'Properties' and give it any US markings-
ilmb6.jpg

6- Move the cursor over the end of the runway, hold CTRL and left-click to place the plane.
click 'Plane 1' and don't forget to tick the 'Player' box to make yourself the pilot-
ilmb7.jpg

7- click 'File' at top left, 'Save As' and type any name (i've used the name 'aaa').
ilmb8.jpg

8- click File>Play, and away you go. Now just fly using the same keys as in the Beginners Tutorial I posted earlier.
(I don't know who the artists are who created the games planes, but they deserve a medal)

ilmb9.jpg

9- you can play the mission over and over now its on your drive, just select 'Single Missions'-
ilmb11.jpg

10- Select it in the USA >Missions list, then hit 'Brief' and 'Fly'.
ilmb12.jpg

11- I'm Win XP and maybe other OS's are different, so just make sure you've put your two aaa files (yes there are a pair) into an 'A-20' folder (create the folder) in the 'Missions'> 'USA' directory-
ilmb10.jpg

NOTE- you can reload your mission into the editor to tinker with it, for example by adding enemy flak guns, other friendly and enemy planes, ships, trains, weather and stuff, it's all easy to get into, just experiment by clicking assorted buttons. Or if you get fed up with it just delete it from the US missions folder.
I've still only had the game less than a week, so if I can do it anybody can..:)

IL-1946 QUICK MISSION BUILDER 1-minute tutorial
(Don't confuse with the Full Mission Builder)

li-qmb1.jpg

The QMB is simplicity itself, just follow these numbers:-
1- Set for 1 aircraft (all the other numbers should be '0', you're the only kite in the sky)
2- Choose any type from the list (a G4M Betty in this example)
3- Toggle its side to Axis
4- Set 'IJA' (Imperial Japanese Army)
5- Set Bridge as Target
6- No flak
7- Pacific Islands map

Then Save if you want, and Fly.

Your targets, a pair of juicy bridges-

Your machine, a Mitsubishi G4M Betty-

Scratch one bridge!
Tip- in all bombing missions you can hit key F7 to lock your view on the target to keep it and your plane always on screen like this.

My P-47 cuts an Fw-190 to pieces with a hail of 8x 50cal gunfire; the Germans call me "Der Yankee Playboy"

Little bit of aerobatics:

This bridge make me hard time...pylons are so close and you must be extremely precise to pass through...
WHile i was practicing upside down flight , i have noticed that F4 is very sensitive to negative loads on wings. Few times i broke the wings when i tried to pullout from upside flight (by pushing stick forward). I did that to some other aircraft, but they remained in one piece.

There are no less than 15 different Me109 types in the game, each usually with several different armament configs to choose from.
Here my Me109K4 C-3 goes into action against B-17's with devastating effect because I've armed it with the 3x 30mm cannons and 2x MG's config-

Bits of B-17's litter the sky..

Hehe, i think that other B17 on 300 meters would shred you to pieces in RL :)

Btw, yes, only thing effective against bombers are cannons, and lots of them. B17 is tough bird, and it does not come down easily. Saburo Sakai wrote about that.

My Polikarpov I-16 gets stuck into Dorniers, note the bailing crewmen in freefall before opening their chutes-

My Henschel 129B-3/Wa goes hunting its natural prey --Russian armour-- with its Pak 40 AT gun-

Wow...are you strafing or landing!!??

Crashing.... I smashed into the ground an instant after this pic was taken..:)
The real-life aviation term for it is "ground fixation", when a pilot mistakenly stays in his strafing run for too long and doesn't have time to pull up.
The Henschel flies like a brick because of the weight of the cannon, notice I've applied full up elevator and full throttle but it did no good, I was too low and the machine didn't have time to respond, it just pancaked and exploded.
Like I said elsewhere, the game designers correctly model each aircrafts handling characteristics and if you fly outside the envelope you're in trouble..

Seeing as this is a Games Review Section, here's my verdict on IL-1946..
I've been playing it intensively for a week now and I'm slightly disappointed with the gunnery ballistics and the programmers idea of what constitutes 1x scale.

Maybe you just forgot to turn realistic gunnery on:
6124585a.gif

With or without that, Il-2 is model of realistic flight sim. Microsoft CS feels very 'arcady' and it's very easy to fly, land and hit something. Many real world pilots (and WW2 pilots) tried IL-2, and they consider it real. That's good enough for me.

This: "and the programmers idea of what constitutes 1x scale. " i don't understand?

Is there supposed to be a manual in the box or on the disc ? Where can I find out how to play this game and where all the "buttons" are for ?

Check your Il2 folder.
You should have 3 PDF files in there: Aircraft Guide, Manual and Controls

..Maybe you just forgot to turn realistic gunnery on..?

Nah, I tried toggling it on and off, and juggled other buttons too, but the mathematical algorithms used by the game for gunnery and scaling don't match up. It's a pity because IL-1946 looks very good otherwise.
We're seeing things on a flat monitor screen, but the programmers haven't allowed for that. They need to make the 1x zoom larger than real-life, and at the same time increase bullet/shell effectiveness out to a slightly longer range. They could also extend the tracer smoke to stay on screen out to longer ranges so we could judge gravity and G-drop better, which would make deflection shooting easier.
I've played almost every WW2 flight sim that's been released over the past 28 years so my experience is pretty good.
As regards Microsoft Combat Flight Sim 2, there's a strong community out there who think it's the better of the two sims.
On the other hand the IL-46 community swear theirs is the best sim, so it's just a matter of preference..:)
